From the Champions League to the Sussex Senior Cup. Didnt Sasha Illic go the other way?

I was gutted that we missed out on Sasa, a decent keeper playing right on our doorstep, so to speak.

Didn't he break his leg and then go to West Ham?

I checked my statement about Illic and its is indeed true, he was in goal for some Hungarian team against Man U in the 3rd qualifying round for the 2002/03 season . They won their home leg 1-0 but Illic was sent off as they lost at Old Trafford 5-0.

Egyptian-Swedish goalkeeper Rami Shaaban was signed by Arsenal on Friday August 30, 2002. He joined the North London club from the Swedish club Djurgerdens on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.

Manager Arsene Wenger told Arsenal's official web site: "We are very pleased to have signed Rami Shaaban.

"He is an experienced goalkeeper who has impressed us during his trial period with the club. Rami will bring extra depth to our squad in what will be a very demanding season."

Shaaban is 27 years old. He produced some impressive displays for the Swedish outfit in the 2001-2002 season and helped his club claim the runners-up spot on their debut in the top division in Swedish football.

His achievements prompted Arsenal to make a long-term commitment to him and the Swede, whose background is Egyptian, was delighted to be on his way to North London.

Rami made his first-team debut for Saltsjobadens in Sweden aged just 19. He gained experience playing in Africa by spending brief spells with two Egyptian clubs, Zamalek and Thadosman.

In 1997 Rami returned to Sweden and joined Nacka FF for two seasons before moving to Stockholm's Djurgardens in 2000.

After completing his move to Highbury, Shaaban said: "It was a very easy decision to come to Arsenal and I am delighted to be joining the English champions. Arsenal have a great history and I am very proud to be part of this great club."

Shaaban was given the No. 24 shirt on his arrival at Arsenal.

He made his debut in the North London derby at Highbury on November 16 and started in our tough away games at Roma and Manchester United. However the Old Trafford encounter ended in disappointment when a groin injury forced him off in the first half.

He then broke his leg in training on Christmas Eve and missed the remainder of the season. After sitting out the entire 2003, he moved on loan to West Ham the following January to get some much-needed first team experience.

However, when he returned to Arsenal in the summer, it was clear that he was surplus to requirements for the champions and Shaaban was released.

Planetfootball.com reported that 27 year-old "Swedish/Egyptian" goalkeeper Rami Shaaban has been on trial at Highbury.

Arsenal have been looking for a keeper after the deal with Carini fell through. If Shaaban moved to Arsenal, he will be the second keeper after Seaman. However Seaman is now 38 and if Rami impresses he may have a good chance of starting in the future.

Will national team staff call Rami for the NT?

According to planetfootball.com, Rami is keen on the move:

"It feels truly great to be here," said Shaaban.

"Arsenal don't bring just anybody here.

"We worked for one hour and fifteen minutes. Seaman was working with strength, so I was standing in the goal for some play situations.

"I felt that I was was doing my best. I talked a bit with Arsene Wenger and he seemed pleased.

"I heard about it for the first time a few days ago. Since then, it has all gone really fast. "This is the chance of my life, but it is far from signed, yet.

"I have tried to keep as low profile as possible with this." Shaaban's agent claims a deal could be done next week, if Wenger wanted to pursue the player.

"If the message is positive, I and Rami will travel back to London on Monday to discuss the contract," said the player's agent Johan Stromberg. Wenger is currently looking at a number of goalkeepers, after his move for Juventus' Fabio Carini collapsed.

Egyptianplayers.com comments:

EP posted the player's profile and his news as we believe that he can fit nicely in Egypt's national team. The player is now on trial with English Premiership winners 2001-2002 and one of the top clubs in Europe.

As the Swedish national team coach might call the player for their national team anytime, EP notified the press to spread the word till Egyptian national team staff get a notice and take action. But till now, Nothing was announced regarding the player yet.

This way, the player will very likely join Sweden squad in the near future and Egypt will miss him as a national team player forever.

Former Arsenal man slams Spurs

21:11 1/30/2005

Rami Shaaban has slammed Tottenham Hotspur Football Club for signing Radek Cerny.

The former Gunners goalkeeper was hoping to earn a deal at White Hart Lane, yet was furious to learn the Londoners have instead opted to sign Cerny on an 18-month loan deal.

Shaaban believes a contract was to be offered to him, yet the relationship between Spurs and Slavia Prague was key to them turning to the Czech Republic international.

"As my agent said, it's like signing your own keeper," said Shaaban. "It's about politics and business. It would have been easier to accept if he was a better keeper."

I have seen him play and he is very good.If it wasnt for his injuries he would have played a lot more for Arsenal.
If we sign him it will be goodbye to Ben Roberts and we will have a new number one next season.

I wouldn't be worried if I were Chris May, MM has already said that he is one for the future (I know talk is cheap but I will trust him on this one) more likely to be Ben Roberts shaking in his gloves at the moment, unless of course a large offer came in for FDM.
