Kind of agree. A lot depends on our ambitions. If we are looking to push on and challenge it's difficult to see what Barnes offers ... if we were content to be mid table then he's an OK squad player. But still time to improve and maybe wrong to write him off yet ... only thing is I'm not sure he has a place in the same team as CMS who needs more of a target man alongside him. I actually thought Barnes was OK today but mostly for his tracking back and some decent defensive stuff ... the more upfield he was the more anonymous he became and one shot in particular, that might have gone out of the ground, had me groaning

Decent at league one level, average at best at this level. Hoskins looked promising today though, got into plenty of good positions and showed good movement and touch.

He made some effort, but on the whole I thought he looked a bit lazy & out of touch?
I don't know if it's a confidence thing, constantly playing out of position or what, but it's almost like he starts a game with his head down.

Although not a lot of choice ... per interview Gus didn't really want to risk Hoskins more than 30min's ... so only alternative was a Dev player although I'm not sure i wouldn't have wanted to see Hoskins start and Toby on bench

the answer lies in Rugrat's earlier observation that what he does that Gus likes is to track back and he defends from the frontwhich means that our back 4 are not over-exposed as they have been in some games this season (notably when Barnes hasn't played). He is not (yet at least) able to play both roles comfortably and the attacking element of his game is suffering but right now, after our all too recent near disastrous run of defeats, I think Gus is putting him in the side first and foremost for his ability to give us an extra bit of defensive cover. I suspect neither Gus nor Barnes wil be massively concerned with what fans' think about his inclusion as long as the results come.
