"Brighton and Hove Albion has applied for planning permission to extend its stay at Withdean stadium.

The club has asked the city council to extend its lease until 2011 - a year after the club is scheduled to move into a new £50 million stadium at Falmer.

However Albion chief executive Martin Perry has moved to assure fans he expects no delays to the Falmer process, and the club still expects to kick off the 2010/11 season in its new home."

Probably 'just in case' the building work overruns, but it does mean we will be paying for 2 stadiums at once if we move in on time!

And if something happens outside of the club's control and the building work does over-run (it does happen you know) but we aren't allowed to stay at Withdean because we didn't have the foresight to apply for a licence "just in case", then there would be a new "DK Out" poll thread within seconds.

FFS grow up.

Edited: and the quote from the Albion on the matter:

"As we have done before, we need to extend our stay at Withdean. We are applying to extend the period to 2011 - but supporters need not worry, there are no delays with the new stadium move and we remain on course for 2010.

"This extra year is simply to give us the time to carry out the required work to leave our legacy at Withdean - as we always promised we would. As part of this arrangement we are hoping that the club will be able to continue using the venue for other Albion teams, including the reserves, youth and women's teams."

Top Community team - we should be praising this not spinning it into a "Brighton are incompetent" thread.

Maybe Perry is securing Withdean so he can beam back a live feed of the Falmer match to the many ticketless thousands unable to get a seat in the sold-out Dick Knight Stadium?

Or, to look at it another way. If the club was fearful that it wouldn't be able to kick-off in the 2010/11 season as planned and had to extend its lease, why not present it as a positive move by talking about the things that it was going to do for the community and hope that people would be too diverted by that to ask questions about the timescale.

I hasten to add that I'm not suggesting that is the case. But if the club were facing a delay in the process, that's certainly how I'd spin it if I were the club's PR man.

And also the 4,500 who turn up to the reserve matches as they cant get to Falmer because its sold out every match.

There is the other matter of an additional planning application for Falmer before work can start - nothing dramatic, just a tidying up excercise but certainly worth keeping in mind.
