Al Bangura Petition

Could he not use the route that many Aftricans do to enter England by going to another country within the EU first if he is so concerned about his life.
Most of those are from former French colonies and they come into Europe via France.

Sierra Leone is, of course, a former British colony and a member of the commonwealth.

Can someone explain the logic of allowing Andriy Shevchenko to live and work in the UK and not allowing Alhassan Bangura to do the same thing?

No, but then again two wrongs don't necessarilly make a right.

Because I dare say that Shevchenko had the correct work permit and visa before he entered the country whilst Bangura was/is an illegal immigrant.
You have to be consistant and whatever the law regarding immigration is then it must be upheld.

Genuine asylum seekers should be made to feel welcome. He is a young man in a decent profession, paying tax as he should do. I would far rather have someone like this in our country than the hoardes of terminal jobless who are not interested in contributing to society.

Yep about right.....

You just know that they make no real effort in trying to catch the real illigal scroungers, but yeah, they show their steely determination in trying to deport a young successful professional, who is a positive contributor.

Why he has no legal right to be here. Would you say the same if he drove a bus for a living instead of playing football.

I would.

If this case can bring to the attention of famously-conservative football fans the fact that our policy on asylum seekers is an iniquitous and vicious exercise in man's inhumanity to man, then I, for one, am fully in favour of this campaign.

We do not know that to be the case. We only know about him because of his high profile. He is subjected to the same laws as all others illegal immigrants. If he was a bus driver or barman we would not have heard about it and everybody would have said ' he is an illegal immigrant send him back.'

Well as I understand it, he was granted a work permit on the basis of being an extraordinary players and offered a work permit but is not nor would be granted British Citizenship, different arguments.

I don't know enough about the facts and I suspect not many people on here or at Watford do.

If he life is under threat then let him stay. If not, then he should leave.

I can't help thinking all these Watford fans would be far less likely to rally around a local 'non footballer' resident in similar circumstances.

Shevchenko is only here to play football and is not classed as an Immigrant risk whereas Bangura is an immigrant risk in that he intends to live here full time. It is all a load of aold tosh IMHO and I am going through the same thing in that I am an immigrant risk thus not allowed into the states so where is the difference there?

Humpf - tis not like I'm getting any petitions or anything....probably because I'm playing by the (fairly unfair) rules....

I was just about to use you as an example, tedebear, but was a little unsure. Commonwealth country and coming here = illegal immigrant now
Any European country in the EU and they have the right to come in without any work permits or permissions.

Its a bit odd isn't it. I don't know the facts of this poor chaps case, but what I do know is that if you came here 15 years ago and didn't sort out your immigration status then they won't look too kindly on you. Whether you be assylum seeker or work permit holder or what ever.

The immigration rules are very straight forward which in itself is a problem. The Home Office is such a great hulking inefficient beast that it can't make exceptions for peoples specific cases (it does so only ever rarely still within its laws). You HAVE to fit into a certain check box, or otherwise you're out. Petitions like these can't have an effect as nice as they are, otherwise I'd be getting one myself and having you all sign it!

Edited to add - I too have a husband and child, have a job and have paid taxes on everything I've ever earnt in this country, but that doesn't mean anything.
