[Albion] Ajax Goal Celebrations - Beer Throwing Bans?

Given it happened at Marseille, surely the club & Balkham would have been well aware that beer chucking was a very likely possibility at Ajax. Were there any warnings of the potential repercussions issued on any of the clubs channels before the game? I didn't see anything, but then again I would never waste a full pint...

It's a bit of a dick-ish thing to do, especially considering we have quite a lot of older travelling fans.

But a five game ban feels unfair if there wasn't any pre-warning, and as others have pointed out, it's incredibly hypocritical to ban anyone but still post limbs videos with pints flying everywhere all over socials

It seems the only people receiving bans were those ejected by stewards at the Ajax, and not rounded up by Barber's fun police. It does not seem unreasonable that the club will then issue a ban.

They were wearing Marseille polos, and pretty casual. Had good football knowledge when I chatted to them.

Obviously I don't like to be on the receiving end but it's just harmless fun. And we are not likely to be in a position to do it again in the near future if this wretched form continues.

Dont recal seeing any discussions on bans from Marseille. Wonder why the club didn't say/do anything following that game if it was such a concern to them, regadless of what the stewadrs did/didn't do at that game.

I really don't like the beer throwing, don't support it at all, find it very pathetic. However, there's many things done in the height of emotion in a football ground that you would be embarrased about outside of that environment.

It was fukkin annoying and there were a few angry people around. Thankfully it did not escalate.

Me and my 3 mates got soaked after both goals by the young lager boys behind who seemed to buy their piss water to chuck around rather than drink.

One thing I will note was the Ajax stewards were incredibly aggressive throughout, at the end of the game while we waited for a friend (who has a disability) to go to the toilet they pushed us and actually marched another friend out of the ground. They also confiscated a bag of Werther's originals off my mum which was a bit weird. Not to start on the not letting anyone onto the concourse for 45 minutes even if you needed the toilet, think they also need a look at how their own operation works.

Neither Brighton stewards, or Darren Balkham, have any jurisdiction in Holland as far as I am aware. Please let me know if I am mistaken. Surely if questioned you would just say that you had slipped, thus spilling your pint etc etc. PBOBE really is not the rule maker in foreign countries.

If Ajax allowed our stewards and police into the away end they will have been expecting them to steward and police our fans. They may not have any LEGAL jurisdiction but they will have been allowed to steward what is essentially a public event to help keep that event safe. If they believe someone is acting in a way that is not safe then reporting them to the club and asking them to leave is well within their rights.

I don't believe anyone has been arrested, questioned or imprisoned here. I believe the club, rightly or wrongly depending on opinion and viewpoint, has decided they've acted in an anti-social manner and has stopped them attending a short number of future events, in which they control the attendance, as a result.

Just goes to prove that drinking in the stands at the amex wouldn`t be a good idea.

Or... have it so that we can identify and ban the idiots for a short while and either they learn to behave responsibly, or we can relax without them there for 80% of games.

It's funny how those that like to claim that the 'spilling' / throwing of pints in the air when a team scores, is an unavoidable reflex reaction, can never explain why the same reflex doesn't affect anyone holding a coffee.

I remember the 2-2 away draw v Liverpool in the FA cap back in 1990ish. I was coming back from half time with coffees when one of our goals went in. Spilt some of the coffee over my poor hand.

I'd guess the difference was that at Marseilles, once we were deposited in the underground car park we were 'on our own' in terms of stewarding. Yes, we had the armed police to keep us company, but other than that we were in our safe space, behind perspex and netting, and we were allowed to (within the law) behave as we wanted - so there was lots of smoking, taunting of home fans, climbing on fencing, beer throwing and other shenanigans, but there were zero stewards there to observe.

At Ajax, and as @jackalbion has pointed out, they are very sensitive to things being thrown onto the pitch and I assume onto the home fans also. There were stewards in the away end, and they will have seen people doing things that are deemed unacceptable, including throwing full drinks into air and onto other fans, and will have acted accordingly. As has been mentioned (I didn't hear it on the night) but a warning was put over the tannoy about this, but to little avail.

I don't want football to become a place where you risk getting a pint of beer (or worse) thrown over you by other fans, and clearly Ajax are also keen to stop this.

Once they took action against individuals, Sussex Police / The Albion would be obliged to take some action, and they have. Whether the punishment fits the crime is up for debate, but they had to do something.

Darren Balkham and team sat at the back of the stand in the empty rows to the right of the Brighton fans for the entire game and left just before the Brighton fans were let out. I can only assume that anyone banned was identified by stewards from the tickets and ID.

Some people do like a bit of a drama. A 5 match ban for being a bit of a dickhead, is not going to ruin anyone's life.

On a related point - is there anywhere more slippery in the world than on those steep steps and concourses at Ajax? Saw plenty take nasty tumbles. Beer, rain (on sodden fans) and the closed roof can't have helped but it seemed lethal.
