AFC Wimbledon deducted a lot of points

AFC Wimbledon has been found guilty of breaching Ryman League Rule 6.1 in that Jermaine Darlington played eleven games for the club before an International Registration Certificate was obtained. Because the club was found guilty of breaching Rule 6.1 the Committee also considered Rule 6.8 which deals with playing an ineligible player. The Committee has also found AFC Wimbledon guilty of breaching Rule 6.8.

As a result of these decisions, the Appeals Committee has deducted the eighteen points earned by AFC Wimbledon in the games in which Jermaine Darlington played whilst ineligible. The Committee has also fined the club £400 and the costs of the hearing. An appeal to the FA is allowed and must be lodged within 14 days.

The board of AFC Wimbledon is very disappointed with this outcome and intends to consider the options available to it. Until it has done so, there will be no further announcements.

Didn't Leyton Orient face something similar about 10 years ago, where they had been fielding an illegible player for about half a season, and they were deducted 2 points.

I can remember the irony of Barry Hearn saying that points should reflect what you've earned on the pitch and that is why they shouldn't be harshly treated .... and it was about a year after he'd called for us to be docked points and thrown out of the League after our 4-4 draw at the Goldstone.

If only they were. Remember Spurs and their 12 point deduction - reduced to 6 points, then wiped completely?

Swindon were guilty of the same offense as Spurs, got relegated 2 divisions but then only one division on appeal.

However, AFCW are a big fish in a piddly pond, so it's probably a good thing that they've been clobbered.

Let's just see how even handed the rules are applied shall we. I bet West Ham don't lose any points over Mascaranas and Tevez, if it's proved that their registration is illegal.

Yes, rules are rules and all that but having talked to my AFC-supporting mate about it this morning, this is, he claims, a tiny administrative error to do with (if I understand it correctly) how you register players from Wales along the same lines as international registration, rather than just UK registration - it's purely a matter of extra paper work, nothing more than that.

Given that they're receiving a far harsher treatment than, say, the large-scale fraud perpetuated by Chesterfield ever did, they are, to use the words of William Rees-Mogg in 1967, crushing a butterfly on a wheel - their season's likely to be over now. It seems hugely disproportionate to me at least.

He reckons that AFC Wimbledon are such a cash-cow for that league that they were always likely to throw the rule book at them in order to keep them in it, which makes perfect sense to me.

Naah, bollocks, I want the mighty Hornets to get promoted out of that division...break a rule, get caught, be punished...same in most walks of life.

There's a slight difference between an admin error and fraud!

It's the same punishment that got that team relegated last year, I await West Ham to be docked points too...

Will West Ham be deducted points for fielding Tevez?

Will they be penalised for the same infringement in the FA Cup? Bury were chucked out of it, so can we expect them next year to be unable to take part?

Why weren't Leeds deducted points for fielding an ineligible player this season?

Why are Liverpool allowed to sign a player who has already played for 2 clubs this season, when the rules say they can't?

Some rules it seems only apply to small clubs. That's the annoying thing.
