Lightweight. My commute for years was 210 mile round trip. (Essex to Oxford).

Mercedes. Every day of the week. They drive themselves to the tip mate.

I love my 320d it's great commuter car for distance work. My previous 120d was the best handling car I've ever driven and the sports seats the most comfortable I've ever had - Munich Legend every time for me.

Renault Modus diesel. On your run you'll get 64mpg with enough performance for dual carriageways and A or B roads.

French cars come in for a lot of stick but Peugeot diesels are amongst the best you can get. For a long-distance commute I'd seriously consider a 307 diesel. (or is it 308 now)
Buy one that's 12 months old and let someone else take the depreciation hit.

This. The 2 litre Peugeot diesel IS the best engine ever produced.

I go for banganomics. I buy cars for 2 to 3 grand, run them until they die, then throw it away and get another one. You obviously win some and lose some, but overall, its the cheapest form of motoring. I never get them serviced, other than an oil change every couple of years. The only cost is getting it through the mot, and that tends to be minimal cost these days. My current wreck is a 2003 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi Diesel, which I bought for less than 2 grand about 4 years ago with about 100k on the clock. I've done 60k in it and its probably cost me about 200 quid in repairs over the 4 years (+tyres etc). I can park it anywhere and no one is going to nick it. I also like the inverted snobbery of it, but maybe I'm just weird.
