Can any of you Spanish expats point me in the direction of the best/cheapest provider for an elderly relative who lives over there and is not at all savvy. I am trying to sort out an internet connection.

Thanks in advance

Its absolute horse shit out there. They are best speaking to neighbours or looking around their local town for providers.

Telefonica is most likely.

Depends where you are in Spain. Here in Extremadura it's definitely Movistar (Telefonica as was), about 40 euros a month for ADSL and phone line with free calls to landline numbers. There are others but they are unreliable.

It also depends if you are in a town or a village or in the countryside. Often you can't get a landline in the countryside and dongles are definitely iffy. Satellite is an option and is coming down in price-

And you won't get UK style speeds. The ADSL we get in the office is OK, but might be a problem if you want to download loads of porn videos, although I suspect this may not be an isue for your elderly relative. Where does he/she live? And ahat deos he/she want to do?

if you are into alternatives to ADSL, vodafone have got their act together technically for their usb modem internet. contracts range from 20e to 46e. the 20e euro a month gives 1Gb super quick (7Mb p/s) then 125kb p/s unlimited thereafter (download movies etc overnight) and you can opt out any month.

If you are Andalucia area Telitec does the cheapest packages [line rental - Europe calls - broadband] for 39.95 euros month +IVA.

Thanks guys. Orange have an offer of euros 11.95 for two months and then 20.95 including the box. Seems to be the best offer? ADSL only, phone calls are not really an issue so not that important.

This is in a fairly remote area in the Balearics. I have checked the landline with Orange and this is obtainable. At the moment they use an orange 5 euros a day dongle which is slower than a one legged tortoise

Again it depends where you are. Vodafone coverage here is rubbish. There are big chunks of Spain with very little coverage. But then a lot of people in rural Spain don't even have a computer!

yep, one would need to do a test, this can be done by activating 3g on a mobile phone and seeing how many 'bars' of 3g signal appears (if any).
