strings - I think the six game ban being discussed includes three for the stamp.

I see (on the radio it said 6 matches for the celebration).

I agree the he should be punished on both counts. However, it annoys me that the FA have been telling us that they cannot act if a referee has already dished out a card. Now they are willing to change that rule.

I just wish the FA didn't chop and change the rules all the time.

For people who don't know the rules (which seems a lot) the FA can amend a punishment if the ref admits he got the decision wrong. So if Clattenberg(was it) watches a video of the goal celebration and says that he thought it worthy of a red based on the video, they can increase the ban

 that makes sense.

I'm sorry, there's no way that celebration was worthy of a red card. I am sick to the back teeth of neathanderthol football fans who think it is perfectly fine to spent the whole game singing abusive chants but then get 'incited' when a player dares response. The idiots need to grow up, quite frankly.

On the other hand, the stamp was of course vicious and shocking, and should in itself be worth a 6 match ban.

Ah, thanks for that.

Is a ref really going to say that a goal celebration is worthy of a red card though? That could set an, er, interesting precedent.

Adebayor should be punished for the stamp on van Persie and for that alone. Why shouldn't a player celebrate like that if he has just scored after the amount of grief he got from the Arsenal fans? I know a steward got hurt but that was because of the Arsenal fans' behaviour, not because of Adebayor. If he gets a ban for the celebration then the message is 'wind up a player by abusing him and you'll get him a ban'

Hopefully they will also take action against Arsenal for "failing to control their supporters" - even if only a fine and perhaps a ban on buying tickets for a few away games

Football fans get all precious when players, who have been getting abuse all game, decide to celebrate in a big way in retaliation to their taunts. Brighton fans are as bad as any of them-Scott McGleish gets shit the whole time from Albion fans who then get pissed off and precious when he over celebrates after scoring the inevitable goal against us.

We all know Adebayor is guilty of violent conduct and for that he'll get punished-rightly so. The celebration should be ignored. Why do football fans feel that it's OK to abuse a player for 90 minutes without some form of retaliation? A bit of banter is OK and is often expected but sometimes, with the non-stop abuse some players get, I'm surprised there aren't more Cantona type retaliations.

For all the crap the Arsenal fans gave him, he answered them ON the pitch where it mattered.

Yes he let his feet do the talking and that's all he should have done.
No need to charge up the pitch and goad the Arsenal fans - there's no better way to get your revenge than scoring against them and condemning them to defeat.

Well there is really, especially when those away fans have been abusing you all game. Score your text book header and then run and milk the applause of the home fans, completing your celebration in front of the away fans affording yourself a quiet chuckle at the fat mongs piling down the front in outrage but not being brave enough to break through and have a proper pop at said player.

It was utter quality and personally I absolutely loved it. Would he have done that without all the abuse he took before he scored? Probably not. It's quite simple - if you can't take it, don't dish it out.

I think it's better to be the bigger man and not stoop to their level.
I wouldn't like to see one of our players goading opposition fans in a similar manner.

i really dont want to get into some personal slanging match but its FOOTBALL FOR FUCKSAKE, passion excitement etc, if you dont enjoy your new striker scoring a goal against his supposedly "bigger former club "and then running the length of the pitch to goad the fans that gave him stick for 18 months then perhaps its not for you ?

We'll have to agree to disagree then.
