Adam El Abd is one of us. His lack of pretension and ego are a credit to him - how many of us would be so level headed in his position?

He's living the dream, but knows that the dream could end at any time. And when it does, there are no guarantees. Life can be very tough indeed for ex-pros at any level.

I havent seen the programme but lets think about this.

I dont know what AEA is on now but lets be nice and say 7,000 a week = 364,000 a year
He might get this for three years but no more = 1092000
Before that he was earnign significantly less lets say an verage of 1000 a week = 52000 a year
for lets seven years = 364000 a year
lets assume thats it so total carreer earnings = 1456000

As he is in the top 20% of english professional footballers would it be fair to assume a comparison with somoene earning 30,000 a year
So lets mutilpy that by 30 = 900000 career earnings

Its not hugely different is it? Its not even double and this is IF a footballer doesnt get injured early

I, for one dont begrudge him getting his priorities right.

I thought AEA's contribution was the best (comparatively) part of a shocking 'documentary'.

Have to agree with that.

First you say you didn't judge him then you state you were disappointed because he was a nice bloke! Would you prefer it if he had a domestic life like John Terry or Ashley Cole.

As for being a pro footballer, that doesn't mean he is on mega bucks. Might have a reasonable salary now but don't forget he has spent most of his time in the lower leagues and would have been on a pittance when a young footballer.

This is very true. I taught him to drive and he was on a quite a low wage. Could have earned more on a building site.

i dont know what he earns but probably not as much as you imagine.

i am sure by normal standards he could afford a bigger house but he is probably being sensible and trying to pay off his mortgage whilst he is still earning. rather than having a £3m pad (which to be honest no lender is going to give him a mortgage on unless it is a very short term repayment loan which he couldnt afford anyway).

these guys have such a short shelf life they probably have 10 years (barring injury) to pay off a mortgage that most of us take 25 years to pay off.

Pretty underwhelming documentary, but I thought Adam came across as a genuine thoughtful guy, probably not as mean or as threatening as some might of liked.

I didnt see it as him moaning about his lot, but more about the insecurities that footballers have, especially lower league players as compared to the Premiership.

I dont rate BHA players as lower league players and I am sure they get well paid, but I am sure he was guided by the producer in offering a view of how he is not a muliti million pound footballer, no more than that.

OK hands up. Given the response of most on here I have obviously misinterpreted the point he was trying to make. Evidently he was trying to imply that the job he has isn\'t as rosy as some people like to think. The way I took it was he was claiming he had it just the same as the rest of us financially. Clearly I couldn\'t have been further from the truth.

For the record I never doubted that he is Albion through and through or a nice man to boot.

Apologies for any offence caused.

It's not like he was saying he was worried about providing for his family whilst sunning himself next to his olympic sized swimming pool and being waited on by a team of half a dozen servants. Looked like a modest sized house and a guy that wants to do the best for his wife and daughter.

And as others have said, he's always going to be one incident away from possibly suffering a career ending injury, and bearing in mind he missed most of last season through injury, it was probably still playing on his mind heavily around the time that was filmed.

Spot on.

The only thing I would quibble with was his consideration that he wouldn't be good enough in the Premiership. I actually think he'd do well.

I hope AEA sees out most of his career with us gets awarded a testimonial. He will surely get one of the biggest turnouts since Jimmy Case if he does.

Top bloke and will be an Albion cult hero up there with FDM and Gary Hart

Despite all the reminders on here I still missed it last night (I was a bit pissed off at first but judging by others comments it was probably for the best) so cant comment on what was said on TV, BUT I have meet AEA's Dad a few times and I can honestly say if Adam is anything like his Dad he is a top top fella, My old man has Meet Adam and said he is just like his Dad (lot of Dads there hope that makes sense)

Please don't.
It's approaching lunchtime.

If we have to see a gash from the AEA household, there must be a better one to show ............
