As with any new laws, it takes forever for the government to play catch-up and adapt laws to new and emerging threats. It took ages for a bill to be passed with stalking, same with revenge porn, also criminalising former "legal highs"... and it will be ages before the rise in acid attacks is properly dealt with.

At the moment it seems to be a 'London thing', with a label of inner city boredom.
I'm guessing it's the thing to do, to be big in front of others or something else.
I mean a few years back, it used to be cool to get an ASBO or be tagged.

Spent a couple of hours wandering around Worthing town centre today with my missus.
Saw a little scrote detained for shoplifting in Poundland - - - - - - don't ask.
Then saw another one nick the money out of the tray from a singer in the pedestrian area. He couldn't chase him because of leaving his speakers and microphone. I couldn't give chase because of the five full bags I'd been lumbered with fffsake!

I think that when they term these assaults as acid attacks, they mean any corrosive fluids, which caustic soda is certainly one.
