Vankleek Hill, actually....
I recommend a 17" MacBook Pro. Purchase a copy of Windows and virtualisation software like Parallels or VmWare and you'll be good to go.

That way you run the best operating system on the planet (OS X Leopard) and can switch to Windows whenever you feel the need. And the laptop looks a damn sight better than Dell, Hp, et all.

Just my $0.02 worth

Apart from the cost of course, why do you think the original poster was asking about an Acer ? Why get a Mac to emulate a PC just because you prefer the look of the Mac ? Hardly a convincing argument is it ?

Used to have an Acer and had no complaints until I dropped it. Now it won't charge and I can't find anywhere to repair it so have bought a Dell Inspiron. Can't find fault with it

Two Acers in my house, very pleased with both. I'm typing this on my Aspire 5535.

PCs and/or laptops which start running slowly have always either been infected with spyware or a virus, or have too many processor hungry apps loading at start up. Its not the fault of the hardware.

Likewise 3 Acer laptops, 2 away with students. Only problem has been the charger packing in on one of them.

Good spec for the money.

I was think of getting one, but you can't get away from the fact they are small .

My biggest consideration when buying anything is the keyboard.

I know you can replace the things on workstations, but some laptop keyboards I've used are shocking. God knows what using something that small is like.

For work, I'll only use a single manufacturer of keyboard and took it with me for my new job.

Cheers, I was thinking of it as a birthday present for my daughter. The review speaks well of the keyboard.

Oi !, start your own bloody thread you, this is strictly Acer stuff here :jester:

But seriously, it's nice to see so much feedback. Thanks all.

I think on balance I've been encouraged rather than put off Acers. We're thinking of one of their 4gb ram, 320hd, blue ray, 18" screen jobby for around £700 so we can do everything nice and quick and really get the best out of DVD's out in the garden on summer evenings.

I work in the same building as PC Advisor and the guys from there were raving about the Aspire netbook as the best on the market but as for other models, it's a bit more a mixed message.

In truth, there's no easy answer to this question, because you should really ask about a particular model and say what you want to use it for. Some people have different priorities: is speed more important? Is support more important? A great graphics card? Does size or weight matter?

The only thing I will say is that I agree with BHE- Vaio's suck big time. Our company has stopped using them as so many models had to be returned or replaced - the only make of PC that seems to be consistently dodgy.

Thank you for that, I think that the Acer is a decent machine and very good value for money. I have nothing personal against Sony's but I know from experience that I would not want one.

i have an acer 9300, one of their higher specs but is very quick and never had a problem.

Get one, but if you get a cheap lap top, dont expect it to be the dogs nuts!

Typing on an old ACER Aspire 5630, been dropped and dragged around the country for the past two years and been very reliable. Runs Vista and is full of recordings both muisc and DVD and only just starting to creak.

It was from PC world and was bought because it offered higher spec than the Sony type brands. I am not knowledgeable on PC stuff but imagine all the stock sold in these enviorments is built for mass market so you get what you pay for, I would think upgrading this model or trying to game on it would not be advisable. But it does what I need from it, wireless internet access is easy, streams video.

I need to buy a new laptop and want good speed, memory and visuals but I am struggling to find one for my buisness that is not a gaming or home entertainment one. Was going for this but it has sold out, I liked the idea of HD images and TV reciever built in
