Abide with Me - what was THAT?

The power and emotion of Abide With Me is supposed to come from massed ranks of fans all singing it together. Not from some operatic diva whose totally inappropriate, horribly overamplified trillings just ruin the atmosphere and stun the crowd into embarrassed silence.

It looked as if neither team's fans knew or even cared about the song or its significance. No one was singing it. Given the fact these clubs are both famous for their singing, that was staggering. And so very different from the emotional rendition by most of the crowd at Wembley in 1983... Anyone remember that?

Today, it was just an embarrassment. If the FA really can't get into their blazered heads that Abide With Me is about real fans' emotions rather than takeaway Glyndebourne, then they should just drop it. As they did the little fat man in the white suit with his podium on wheels and cringe-inducing 'community singing'.

After today's debacle, Abide with Me should be returned to the fans. Otherwise, abandoned. Anyone agree?

Hear hear.

Today's effort was appalling. An absolute disgrace.

AGREED.

The MILL STAD is a class stadium but the way they present the FA Cup is dodgy, it's not supposed to be about all the fireworks, opera singers, playing music when they lifted the cup :nono: it's supposed to be about the fans and the greatest club competition in the world. Hopefully they will get back to the ESSENCE of this at Wembley.

And also hopefully the'll have the steps like the old Wembley, makes it more special then doing it on the pitch.

It's the FA that make the arrangements and do the presentation, not the owners of the Millennium Stadium. Obviously.

Expect plenty more of the same at Wembley.

Fed up with opera singers at all matches, I know that there is a tendency now to boo national anthems (which is disgusting imo). Just wish we could go back to just having the crowd singing without any need for the opera singers.

The Scottish Final looked to be a similar showbiz effort.

Exactly. It used to be: announcement, expectant silence, the band strikes up a lead-in, PA man starts off in his ordinary bloke, (ie non-operatic) voice - and the crowd just takes it on all the way from there. Two minutes of one vast crowd of humanity singing together, united in sharing one amazing, hugely historic moment. Totally awe-inspiring and utterly moving.

Can we have all that back please, FA?

I thought it was shite too, plus i don't like the orchestrated celebrations when the trophy is lifted, you find that you are just going along with the music playing.

Anyone else think that the mill stad is shit for the cameras given the huge shadow that always seem to cover half the pitch. Yesterdays match looked like one of the world cup games from the seventies at times.

The match itself made it a fantastic advert for the English game though.
