They've got a better system round my way.

They have a speed radar next to a "your speed" display, and then 100 yds further down the road there's a traffic light. If you're speeding, the light goes red for 15 seconds and you have to stop.

Works a treat at slowing people down and doesn't hit you in the pocket - and after all, isn't the point of cameras to improve road safety, not generate revenue?

I should have said - this is in France. Over the border in Switzerland there are more cameras than you can shake a shitty stick at....

As far as the UK is concerned, they are a revenue rasier,

...only if you choose for them to be a revenue raiser. It really is this simple. I kind of see it as a tax for the stupid.

I am sure that I read once that the new blue cameras you see springing up everywhere were going to be used for traffic flow, tax, speed insurance etc and could record something like 60k cars a day and as they were digital would need no attention. If you were caught speeding or no tax or insurance or MOT the camera automatically generated a ticket to be sent to the last registered owner.

The Automatic Number Plate recognition cameras ANPR not only check your car against the insurance, tax database but they can also track your journey from place to place and then work out the average speed, this is the near future.

You have been warned, I suppose most of you are too young to remember this country before it turned into a police state!

Yes I did see those this evening, just another cash register for the HMRC
Given the fact that the camera in question is just before a junction with a long history of bad accidents (along with the ones at Dial Post) I would say that these at least are placed where they improve safety. Anyone who goes through one of those over the limit deserves the fine IMHO

I'm not too young to remember! We,re not quite there yet,but give it time and we could be.Why does this small island have a quarter of the worlds cctv cameras;why do riot police cover up their identification lapels;why does an Opposition M.P.get arrested for doing his job of exposing Government cock-ups;why do the Government want to monitor and store every single e-mail sent and every single internet site visited;why do the Government use powers that were brought in to protect us from terrorism abuse their powers and hide behind the threat of terrorism to curb individual freedoms?
I really do worry that we have become complacent in this country and are almost immune to what is going on.In 20 or 30 years time we may well look back and ask why we sat back and allowed certain things to happen without a ounce of protest!!

That road is f***ing dangerous - so the more measures they take to slow people down the better.
Yeah, but the real accident black-spot is the single-carriageway section between Capel and Horsham - the only way to make that section safer is to complete the dual-carriageway and straighten it out.

I think if you experienced an actual police state you might tone down the hyperbole.

Only been to East Germany and quite frankly I am struggling to see the difference ! Their monitoring of the people wasnt as sophisticated as ours is, I accept that we arent there yet as we dont need papers to travel from one part of the country to another and our press is still free.
