I read about this song a long time ago in a book about Latin music. I think the song originally comes from Mexico and is a wedding tune. Bamba comes from Bamblear(sp?) which means to shake.

In saying that "I am not a sailor", the husband means that he will be faithful to his wife. He is a captain - a man of principles.
