No. Some people object to the name Brighton pier as they object to the Noble organisation's attempt to interfere with the rebuilding of the West Pier. They don't want to play Noble's game for them.

All the council signs are for The Palace Pier. Which is it's name. The fact that somebody burnt down The West Pier to try and clear up any confusion between the two piers i.e. the one in line for big architectural heritage grants and the piece of tat along the road, is neither here nor there.

Agreed Gwylan and Tom Hark.

Palace Pier. NOTHING to do with football.

So, basically,

Some people call it 'Brighton Pier' because that is what it is now officially called and they object to the word 'Palace'

Some other people call it 'Palace Pier' because that is what it was called for years and years before the name change and they want everyone who reads NSC to know that they are brighton born and bred, have lived in the area for years, are 'real brightonians' and therefore BETTER fans than those people who are calling it 'Brighton Pier'.

Now, am I right or am I right?

No, you're wrong. It's as wrong as a brewery taking over your local pub and changing it's name.

I used to go to the Brighton/Palace pier alot. Untill I found out they were pursuing legal action against the West Pier trust. So I have stopped.

The Palace Pier performs a very important function in Brighton. It is a 'pikey overflow' for the chav brigade who's natural calling is to head to the seafront and get pissed during a weekend trip to the seaside when they have no idea what else to do in any other town other than their own. It helps on overcrowding in other more deserving areas of the town.

Look at the facts:

1. It's over the sea, so once they hit the beach they can still keep going south - this is a primordal urge.
2. There's Karaoke at the end of it.
3. And a fairground. The Pikey Mecca.
4. It's at the start of Madeira Drive so the kids in their modified Novas get drawn in as well.
5. It has it's own radio station - so the voice of a moronic DJ will make the customers feel like they are back of your typical soul-less nightclub.

Without the Palace pier, these people would be roaming the streets. Remember, when it finally fills up, it will automatically detach itself from the roundabout, and float back to Essex where it f***ing belongs.

...... and another thing. All those people who say, "it's just a name, deal with it", how would you feel if somebody took over the Albion and changed our name to something like "the Withdean Wildcats"?

I would, but it will never happen so argument is a bit pointless.

I don't really care what people call it, it's a pier! In discussion I will always refer to it as The palace pier as that is all I have know it as!!

That isn't me telling people IM FROM BRIGHTON or such like, if people are offended by this well sorry but just LIVE WITH IT FFS!!!

No, I'm sorry I don't think it is pointless. It illustrates the point that the names of local institutions ARE important and shouldn't just be changed for dubious commercial reasons. The amount of posts this subject has generated proves that the pier falls into this category. Some places don't have this emotional tie, I don't remember anyone complaining when the Aquarium was sold and became a 'Sealife Center'

I call it Brighton Pier because thats what its called, CPFC has NOTHING to do with it !!

People insisting its Palace pier IMO share the same mind set as the Nimbys who are trying to kill the one thing we all LOVE and agree on !!
If it had anything to do with CPFC. Then surely you bods would call it Palarse Pier wouldn`t you.
