Newcastle United's 'boycott of the Hull match';

Newcastle 1 Hull 2 FT
Xisco 82
King pen 34 , 55

Attend: 50,242

Wow, they really pressed home their message of malcontent...... unless there was a late announcement saying 'king Kev was going to manage again.

More, from soccernet;

"Supporters started to gather at the Milburn entrance to St James' Park long before kick-off, and were joined shortly before 2pm by a black and white throng as a series of organised marches converged on the stadium.

The mood was one of defiance as they chanted for Keegan and against club owner Mike Ashley and executive director (football) Dennis Wise.

Many carried placards bearing the message "No more Geordie cash for Ashley" - a reference to a call for people to boycott Ashley's Sports Direct stores and the club's retail outlets."

THAT must have really put a dent in Ashley's wallet then - the biggest turn-out of the day (so far), even pipping the Liverpool home game vs Manchester United.

they have the biggest stadium of all the ones used today, by some considerable margin......not really a surprise

To be fair, the fans groups had already said that they'd considered it and decided that a boycott of the match wasn't the way to vent their frustration. Doesn't mean they're not fools for thinking that Ashley gives two hoots if a couple of annoyed Geordies avoid his stores, but you can't criticise the high attendance today.

Hmm, I'm not sure that size of stadium necessarily translates into a guarantee of huge attendance regardless of the occasion. Surely, when you consider the opposition being Prem new-boys Hull City it's no glamour fixture, and then there's the supposed boycott.
Hull wouldn't take that many away fans, surely?

It's brilliant that they also got beaten today - as with the above sentiment, that the fans deserve the crap they get.

It's hard to boycott, we've been there. Maybe they should have done something else that we pioneered and the walk out 15 mins from the end, at a given signal.

being on Tv, that would be a powerfull image.

"hull wouldn't take many away fans"???

are you mental? course they bloody did. First season in the Prem, and one of the biggest grounds in the country.

why do the fans deserve the crap they get? some of the best in the country.....

Hull fans will love their tip at the big time so will make the most of it. Newcastle is not too far from Hull either, in the great scheme of things.

The club and fans deserve each other.

Harsh. There Geordies are probably the best fans in the country, have always supported their team and got nothing in return. If they went down, they will be the only side with a large stadium to have a full house.

Why do you say they deserve each other?

You thick ****.

the SUPPORTERS have always SUPPORTED their team? well i think you have ended any discussion with your thorough and in depth insights.

It must be a struggle to support a prem team with international players and a great stadium. THEY.ARE.HEROS!

People are always saying Liverpool or Celtic are the best fans blah blah, but they aren't because they are quite when there team dont do well and always moan when things go wrong. and to top it off, they've always had success and honours.

Newcastle have ALWAYS have had a full house, always passionate, vocal and get f*** all in return.

They have a right to be pissed off.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
f*** all in return? They are playing in the top flight and have reached more finals in the last two decades than many many football league teams. Didn't they used to get 10,000 fans or so when they were in the second division?

If there are so many fans and they are pissed off with how things have been going for so long, why not put their money where their mouth is and purchase the club? (A la Barcelona).

probably the best fans? Based on ......?

You try discussing football with Geordies and find out how great they are as fans. Unless you make condescending positive remarks at how great NUFC are, they don't want you even talking about their club. Insular as f***, and think they have a divine right to success (which, apart from remaining in the Prem, they don't have).

They are no more "best fans in the country" than any other hardcore fans of any club you want to name.

I can't bear these sweeping statements about a whole fanbase.
"Liverpool fans are the best in the country". How's that sound?
It'll be Man City actually. No, wait, it's Fulham......... or West Ham......

Not true. When they were struggling at the wrong end of the second division back in the early 90s they'd get fewer than 20,000 sometimes.
