I'm currently watching Hugh FW on Chl4.
Him and his mate canoed out in search of mackrel and managed to catch 1.

How is this possible?
I was of the impression you either caught 20,000 or none.

Have any of you, only ever caught just 1?

Caught 4 in a huge amount of pollock once, admittedly haven't been sea fishing since the navy started enforcing the licencing/quotas quite harshly...

I've caught just the 1 mackeral many times but at other times you can catch more than you could possibly want or carry home.

Yes, I have caught single mackerel at times - it depends whether you hit a shoal or just the odd solitary fish (and also how many hooks you're fishing with!)

You tend to pick up solitary mackerel later in the year (Sept / Oct).

Used to fish for mackerel with my grandad. Put down lines with about 20 hooks and wait, sometimes you dont get any, sometimes the odd one and sometimes you'll hit a shoal and get 10-15.

I caught 5 on on line in the summer, think between the 7 of us that went we managed to get about 60 mackerell and had a damn fine BBQ after

Which is the reply I was expecting.
Admitedly my own experience stems from summer hols on the Isles of Scilly.
Being a kid in a pleasure boat with 30 odd other people, dropping 8 brightly coloured feathers in the water and a few seconds later pulling 8 mackerel out.
After a short while we couldn't walk down the boat, it looked like the killing fields (only less dramatic).

I guess in hindsight that might go some way to explain why HFW only caught 1.
Stinkers - do wot

I used to catch them off Penzance/Newlyn. My grandad used to gut them with his pen knife while I steered the boat being chased by seagulls!

You can never tell what your going to catch when you go fishing.

Last week a potential british record stingray was caught at Pagham (just past bognor )

Often try for these fish every year, you can see them when you swim in the shallow water from Littlehampton westwards.

Two hours of fishing later - and I bagged 3 carp totalling 40lbs. Not bad at all. Lots more hooked, and two were briefly in my landing net before getting away.

This must be one of the world's best carp fishing spots. From where I was standing I could see at least 100 carp, and in a 100 yard stretch of the river there must have been at least 1000. No tiddlers either.

Now I must get ready to go and see Blondie this evening. The question is, do I shower first or do I let the lovely smell of carp earn me a little more breathing space?
