Which is all well and good until you get to Uni where, if you are studying any of the sciences (engineering for me), you will need to know from first principles how an equation theory etc is derived. I still have nightmares over Maxwell's equations .... the bastard.

i am at uni studying economics where statistics and maths are extensively involved. and my tutor literally wrote the textbook.

I suppose for economics you may well only need to apply rather than derive, but certainly with any of the engineering subjects if you can't derive from first principles etc you are going to have a hard time .... I know from experience.

Having stuck with Maths to get my A level, I'm glad I did. Used a fair bit of Maths in my Geography degree, which a lot of people struggled on (those who didn't do A level maths oddly enough!).

Perhaps if economists really did understand what they are doing, rather than just blindly applying the rule or process that seems most appropriate, we would not currently be peering straight into a financial abyss?

how do you think we'll get out of it? like every other time the economy has taken a downturn

and you can't generalise gordon brown to all economists

this is true. one of my close pals does engineering, and on the maths front i can not say i'm envious
