Does it?

Isn't she trying to head off what's happening in other nations? There is no place for Sharia Law in Australia.

There is no place for Sharia Law here. There is however plenty of room for Muslims who do not follow this law.

Just for arguments sake do you know what Sharia Law entails? It is only extremists that practice stonin etc. Most Muslims in most country's want to adapt Sharia Law to suit the laaws of their new host nation. I bet you couldn't tell me the first damn thing about Sharia Law.

The most relevant bit is this:
'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society ... learn the language!'

This should be a minimum requirement for immigrants arriving in this country.

As an Englishman living in Czech Republic, I have absolutely no intention of learning the Czech language, particularly at my age.

I bet most immigrants pick up English quicker than we would.

Do you have a link to this story? I am interested to know where it came from. This sounds a bit radical for our julia!

There will not be one. I see loads of this sort of thing every week regarding South Africa. They are always anonymous and get sent from email addresses that are then closed again. The really saddest thing is that people believe them and forward them on!

Do you want to implement Sharia Law?

I have studied hard to learn the Aussie language.

Oh and btw julia Gilllard never said this. Bits of it were said by previous PM Howard and some of the rest by other politicians, but some trolll has joined it up added some more and combined it into an anti-islamic rant. Odd that it's resurfacing attached to the current Australian PM, but hey thats racists for you.

Take your word for it.

Just on the language issue though, don't you think that people should swiftly learn the language if they go to live in a different country? On so many levels, both for them and the stretched services in a country like Britain, it is vastly preferable. I don't want my taxes paying for interpreters, I'd rather it went on provision in education and health.

If I went to live in another country, I would consider it priority No1 to learn the lingo (I have, and I did). Not just for my own development, but to negotiate the admin, and life in general. Plus it shows respect for the country you're in, and the locals see it as arrogant if you don't bother.

Given all this, I can't understand anyone who moans about moves to encourage learning English for people moving here.

It's a fact, yes, but the fact that you still seem perfectly happy to exclude the Aboriginals from your view of what Australia is today shows your true feelings on the matter.

Exactly how are they excluded?

Once again you know sod all about what is taught out here and how they are constantly promoted within many facets of society.

At least our education system promotes aboriginal culture and history.

How's yours going recognizing English attrocities around the world?

But Czech is such a beautiful language! The most beautiful of all Slavic languages imho.
To my ear it sounds better than French or Italian; Čeština - a pure, metaphysical linguistic
orgasm :)

Anyway, what I envy western countries the most is the linguistic diversity. If you live
in Dublin or London, then no matter what language you want to learn, you will always find
some native speakers to talk to. In my neck of woods (a small town in Northern Poland)
people speak Polish only (some of them struggle with their Polish too) and it is boring as
f*ck.

goldstone, you've been manipulated and lied to by the person who cut and pasted and embellished various comments by various people on public forums to create that rant. Yet you still hold on to every word they supply.

We are very fortunate to be native English speakers. It almost removes the need for us to waste our time learning foreign languages.

Exactly...this is the 6th country, including England, that ive lived in....and never needed another language.
When I was in the navy at 19, I realised that no matter where I am in the world...if I say ..does anybody speak English...
there will be somebody less than 6 feet away normally, who would be happy to assist you as it helps them learn the worlds business language that helps them get better paid employment...

typical convo for me in moring..

Me: Dobry Den, Benson Cerny prosim....

Shop owner:
Of course sir, that will be 68kc...

Me: oh, dikuyem...

Shop owner: Have a nice day sir...

How's yours going recognizing English attrocities around the world?

Of course, I forgot, as soon as Australia stopped being English, they instantly fixed everything and the country became a bastion of freedom and equality for all. 1983, wasn't it, when optional voting enrolment for aborigines was abolished? But no doubt it was the nasty English people's fault until then.

As for British atrocities, yes, I think our education system does a pretty good job informing people we've been no angels. Amritsar and Croke Park stand out. But unlike you, I'm not going to pretend my country bears no responsibility for them.

Constantly promoted in many facets of society? Can you be more specific?

All I see is negative press and bullshit government policy that is not helping the portrayal of Aboriginal culture or helping Aboriginal live in a meaningful way that reflect their traditions. We still judge them by western standards and do not respect their traditional way of life.
