Well what connects Brighton and Hamburg. Before you ask, it’s not the Reeperbahn
It is instead, the fifth tier club USC Paloma.
Last weekend me and my 14 mates had the pleasure of visiting one of Germany’s best cities. On the Friday night we joined a packed house of 60,000 to watch second division Hamburg defeat FCK 3-0 and move to the top of the Bundesliga 2.
The atmosphere was incredible.
But just as good was USC Paloma a club in the fifth tier of German football. The connection:
Amazing.
I messaged them on Facebook a few weeks in advance and explained we were coming, they said we would be most welcome but what we received was incredible.
A place on the ‘terrace’ with Brighton scarves awaited, ‘welcome to our guests from Brighton & Hove Albion’ came out from the tannoy.
The players clapped us. Despite looking confused.
Even the referee understood us when we told him what we thought after sending a Paloma player off in the first half (very unfairly).
The atmosphere was brilliant, more and more fans came over for photos, more chats. I even met a German Swansea fan who took great pride in telling me they beat Reading in the playoff final and he was there (I liked that).
It all ended with some of the players coming up for a group photo and more beers.
This was despite is being a 10.45KO…on a Sunday.
We have promised to be back, if you’re ever in Germany and want to go and see a club that wear blue and white, and have what looks like a seagull on their badge, then USC Paloma is for you.
It was football as it should be.
They’ve asked us to come back any time. And all Albion fans are welcome.
Quality.
