I'm sure you're desperate for people to ask you what you're on about. So I'm not going to.

I'm playing devil's advocate a bit here - but would Nazi Germany have attacked us if we hadn't declared war on them over the invasion of Poland?

Yes.

Operation Sea Lion was Hitlers plan to invade Britain. These plans were released in 1940. Thus the Operation would have been planned many months in advance, possibly before Britain became involved in the war. So to answer the question, yes they would have tried regardless.

Yes.

Operation Sea Lion was Hitlers plan to invade Britain. These plans were released in 1940. Thus the Operation would have been planned many months in advance, possibly before Britain became involved in the war. So to answer the question, yes they would have tried regardless.

A bit more complex than that, pre-war the Germans had made many studies of potential enemies and how they would deal with them, whether by diplomacy, military conquest, isolation and blockade or aerial bombardment.

However if you read Mein Kampf (I have and while it is fascinating in one way I don't recommend it as a particularly gratifying read) it is quite clear what Hitler wanted the Nazi Party to do once they had gained power domestically and that was to get their Military to sweep east & destroy the despised Polish state and more importantly then invade & crush the Soviet Union to enable the Third Reich to dominate Middle and Eastern Europe.

He was not desparately keen on conflict with Britain but due to the appeasement policy pursued by Chamberlain he was convinced we would not go to war for Czechoslovakia (correct in 1938) or Poland (wrong in 1939).

Can I recommend you read 'The Most Dangerous Enemy: A History of the Battle of Britain' by Stephen Bungay? He is a proper writer and articulates Hitlers war aims in a far more concise way than I have, especially in regards to the possibilty of the invasion of Britain.

By the way he concludes that the Battle of Britain was the turning point of the war if only because it meant that the USA was then bound to be drawn in - have a read and see what you think.

Finally, it may have been 70 years ago but it is still hugely important, the world would not be what it is today but for the rise & demise of Fascism in the 1930's and 1940's and just because the era is slipping from living memory does not change that fact.

The best and most professional armed forces in the world are the British armed forces. FACT. Upmost respect for those serving today, and those who served in the past, including my my mum in the WRENS and my dad in the RN.

Cheers, Guninness Dave :drink:
