I knew exactly what this thread would be about as soon as I saw the title. That's how memorable it was. I was there in the east terraces. He was remarkably skillful for such a big man.
I wasn't there. Amazing as it seems now, I was 7 years old and literally had no idea that a sport called football existed. I knew rugby and cricket but had never heard of football. I think that was the season I learned about it (although I didn't see my first match until I saw the 1966 cup final on TV and didn't go to my first Albion game until 1967).
Given how ubiquitous football is now, it seems scarcely credible but we didn't have a TV then, we didn't play football at school and I was too young to read the papers. So, Bobby Smith's wonder year passed me by
