3rd/4th place play off

How come there is no playoff in the Euro's this year? There was talk of a potential penalty shoot out of Italy and France both went out at the group stages with the same points and goal difference becaue UEFA need to have final positions to work out coefficients.

By that logic shouldnt there be a 3rd and 4th place playoff?

It's probably because nobody is interested in it.

As a spectator sport the lack of a crowd, TV cameras or any interest renders the game slightly pointless

There hasn't been a 3rd/4th place play offs at the Euros since 1980 when Czechoslovakia beat Italy 9-8 on pens after a 1 – 1 draw.

But if UEFA said they needed a penalty shoot out to decide who came where in te coefficients surely it stands to reason that a 3rd and 4th place playoff is necessary at the business end of the tournament? Oh well-they make it up as they go along i guess.

Presumably they just give the same coefficient points to both losing semi-finalists, in the same way that all quarter-finalists don't have a round robin to find out who finishes 5th-8th!

I heard an interview this morning with Gus Hiddink where he said Russia had done well to come third? Perhaps the two losing semi-finalists are awarded equal third place?

On a seperate point, how come ITV aren't showing the final live? They seem to have shared all the other games with the BBC but only the BBC are showing the final live?

Because they know people won't watch their coverage when there is a choice.
