One of the chaps up there only waters courgettes, marrows or cucumbers but the rest are left to nature and he has a fabulous crop.

Funny enough, that was the reaction from the Aussie fans at cricket yesterday when the announcer pleaded with spectators to please take extra care due to the extremely hot sunshine

I've tried that in previous years in the knowledge that less watering encourages a stronger root system as they have to go deeper in search of moisture. I certainly don't water little and often as I don't want to encourage a shallow root system. Have mainly raised beds now though on a clay soil that just cracks and goes solid in persistent hot weather. I think I'll be a few years yet digging in organic matter to get the soil how I want it.

Does your chap grow sweetcorn ? I always like to give that an extra special soaking, if the badgers leave us any that is.
