Team news

New Zealand's victory in Hamilton came with its casualties. Mitchell McClenaghan has been ruled out of the series and Martin Guptill will miss at least the second ODI. McClenaghan's replacement, Tim Southee, is coming off a fine all-round first-class performance and will be hungry to reclaim lost ground after being sidelined by injury for two months. Hamish Rutherford, who made his international debut in the first T20 against England, replaces Guptill.

New Zealand (probable) 1 Hamish Rutherford, 2 BJ Watling, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Brendon McCullum (capt & wk), 6 Grant Elliott, 7 James Franklin, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Tim Southee

England will probably stick with the same XI. James Harris could play to give Steven Finn a rest but with the series on the line, fielding a debutant is unlikely.

England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Chris Woakes, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven Finn

Anyone staying up for this?

I've backed NZ to win, not ever gonna see that money again am I?

NZ 19/1 off 9 overs on a pitch where par is 300! Awfully slow start, England to win comfortably.

19/2 as i sent that last message, think i'll go to bed!

2-0 to the Albion, Jimmy A running through the Kiwis, a large whisky to my immediate right. Happy days (well, happy hours at least).

Excellent win :clap2:

Joe Root looks very very useful, a great prospect, he only looks about 12! Sure I saw an Albion shirt in the crowd just then as well.

Good win, good balance to the team, Trott gets some stick, but his SR isn't really out of kilter with most. Broad's form isn't great but sure he'll come good.....

Just managed to catch the final few overs, agree Root is a keeper, solid, workmanlike and can dig in but can also score quickly when needed. Maybe KP should take note ?

Indeed. Todays innings SR's....

Cook: 84.78
Bell: 67.69
Trott: 89.04
Root: 141.07

Sets up what should be an entertaining decider.

Trott played the perfect innings in the circumstances. Root looks like a proper player, will be pushing for a pace in the test side before long.

Just back to my Hotel in Napier after the game. Not very exciting, England won at a a canter.

The good news though is that England are staying here (Bluewater Hotel) and have taken all the standard rooms, so we got upgraded to a rather nice apartment!

He played for the test side in the last game at 6, I imagine he'll start the first test there as well

Root looks a great prospect indeed. He just seems unflappable - great temperament for high level sport. That'll hopefully make all the difference, compared to someone like Bopara who has all the talent required, but lacks either the temperament or brains (or both) for the highest level.

The future seems bright!

There were 2 of us in the stripes, I was in the main stand around mid wicket, the other guy was on the grass.
