I’m not sure that we’d get involved in a bidding war. If Wolves are serious, they’ll get him because they’d be happy to over pay and we’d be happy to move on.

Wolves interest looks a bit premature. The Mail who originally reported Wolves interest (and Fulham are tracking him too) in their transfer live blog (and all the other sites have regurgitated including the Northern Echo and the BBC rumour round up), also said at weekend that Albion were “continuing to negotiate” with Sunderland (whatever that means).
Sounds like all clubs are taking this one slowly.

could it be that all clubs see the fee as a little excessive

He is a promising player, young and ended last season well. And Albion need another CM. But he’s a track record of injuries and Sunderland need the ££ - so there’s both risk and caution in talking up the price. Which explains why clubs aren’t rushing. Plenty of other targets knocking around without a chairman in the papers every couple of days providing a running commentary exaggerating interest.

Why Eagles and Seagulls are circling McNair >>> https://whisp.rs/2t3vlGv

"The Northern Ireland international, who came through the ranks at Manchester United, is believed to be a transfer target for Palace and the Seagulls this summer.

McNair has also been the subject of Wolverhampton Wanderers transfer rumours, with Sunderland expecting a bidding war from Premier League clubs."

Shame for them that it’s us involved as the bidding won’t go crazy, they better hope a third party like Wolves does throw their hat in the ring with Palace and us. Don’t see us getting in a bidding war with Palace or Wolves.

The Mirror have a "new" story via their transfer blog :

Brighton are set to step up their efforts to land Sunderland’s Paddy McNair after selling Conor Goldson to Rangers.
Premier League Albion sold stopper Goldson to Steven Gerrard’s new Scottish club on Wednesday.
Now boss Chris Hughton will bid again for ex-Manchester United trainee McNair, who is one of Sunderland’s big earners.
The Seagulls have seen offers of around £2milion and £3.5m rejected.
But £5m could be enough to land versatile defender McNair,23, who can also play in midfield and scored four goals in his final five Sunderland games.

Its thin stuff to say the least. Albion have been "stepping up" their bid to land McNair according to reports (see The Sun - who practically had this done and dusted at end of last week and The Sunday Express 10 days ago - who said we'd be coming back in for £5m - )
That said The Argus said this morning that "a bid was still on the table".
Local press say that a deal worth £7m will be enough. Sunderland chairman now sounding a lot less bullish about keeping him.

Surely he can only be considered as a CB in the premier league. He has played CM in a Sunderland side who got relegated but I don't ever remember seeing anything from him last season to suggest his is better than Kayal or Norwood in CM

Not that fussed if he goes elsewhere, the real thing he has going for him is that he is a HGP - and we need to recruit 4 of them if Baldock goes. Pretty vital that both new keepers are HGPs with that in mind.

I think the Boro move will either force our hand or we have simply given up as he is not worth the money...

In fairness I think if he leaves it will be to a PL side.

I think he is better suited to our style than Norwood as a CM. However, you’re probably looking at him being both 4th or 5th choice CM & CB. This is a squad player.

Sun Journalist Alan Nixon says the issue with this deal is that BHA & Sunderland cannot agree the Payment Plan for the fee.
I guess they want more upfront, and we want more as an add-on for a certain number of appearances.
