Calling Barnes Austrian or El-Abd Egyptian is r-e-a-l-l-y stretching it.
Why not add Northern Ireland (Anton Rodgers) into that mix while you're at it?

El-Abd isn't that much of a stretch given he's said he wants to play for them and holds dual-nationality.
As for Barnes he's actually played for Austria, in their U20 team (although only the once).
Brighton & Hove & the rest of Europe Albion
True, but to call him 'Austrian' is pushing it. If he was good enough to play for England, the 'Austrian' bit would hardly register.
Is anyone still calling Tony Cascarino Irish...?
Yeah I know he's pushing it (he only qualifies through his grandmother I believe), but I guess you have to go by FIFA eligibility?
I wonder if, in theory, a player could potentially play for seven countries. I mean if you grandparents were (for example) French, Spanish, German and Austrian, and then your parents were born in Wales and Scotland before you were born in England would you qualify for all seven? Has any player achieved this (if possible)?
Obviously, Israel isn't in Europe either, despite what UEFA pretend.

If you are born to British parents, outside of the UK, your eligibility stretches to a CHOICE of all four British countries, I think. (I fairly certain that this is how Eric Young qualified for Wales -he was born to English parents, in Singapore). So if that's right, you could have 4 x foreign grandparents, and qualify for EIGHT?
What if you had 4 x foreign grandparents, the British abroad situation described and were then registered in Singapore (to continue your example). Would that give you NINE?
