Is that a leftover prop from War of the Worlds?

I admit I don't get modern art at all

Why can't they build things like they used to 'Victorian' style...Instead of monstrosities like that and this....

Architecture is by its very nature subjective, isn't it?

One man's triumph is another man's carbuncle. We evolve in our tastes, where on earth would we be if we only built things like the Victorians did?

If someone suggested building the Royal Pavilion now, from scratch, having never had anything like that in Brighton before, there would be thousands of people complaining that it was completely out of keeping, that it was frivolous and extravagant, or that it looks too much like a mosque.

I don't like everything modern that's proposed, but I accept that some designs that we find odd now will become part of the landscape, much-loved, even, in years to come, and I find it depressing when people just seem to write new ideas off without even pausing to think, just because they're a bit different. We can be a bunch of Philistines sometimes.

If we're talking public art here, just be grateful they didn't commission the hag Tracey Emin to design it, or you'd REALLY have something to moan about.

yeah, what a waste of money, whilst we're at it why not pull down nelson's column, the statue of eros and the tonnes of other statues which tourists come to London to see. Lets not commerorate one of the major things of this century for Britain, especially if the vast majority is coming from private investors.

(sorry i think my sarcasam ran out by the end of that)

What is it with spending vast sums of money on statues across the UK whilst leaving our roads full of holes, the NHS underfunded and the Armed Forces short and missing essential equipment. Surely this misspending lark is getting out of hand

Respectfully disagree - I think that this will be one of the few successes of the whole ridiculous charade.

So the bulk of it is being paid for by a large private steel company and the rest by London council taxpayers, what do I care?!? The LDA has been pouring money at shit and sometimes corrupt projects for years why stop now!

I think it is truly fantastic and will be a lasting symbol for many years to come of the London Olympics 2012

It is not just this sculpture I was referring to in cost, but once you combine the vast amounts spent on projects like this nationwide, you have got to ask is it the best value for tax payers. This year alone, 6 sculptures have appeared within less than a mile from me. I now have two sculptures within a mile dedicated to the areas mining past, a 55-foot high replica Pit Head costing around £40,000 and a 30 foot high 'Brownhills miner' costing £70,000. Within the same area I estimate over 100 potholes, a run down town centre and numerous other local amenities that could have benefited from 100K.

This is just crass.

I dare say that there are people who think much the same about the (more) millions that our southeastern equivalent (SEEDA) are pouring into a project at Falmer.

They would be wrong, just as you are wrong about the LDA.
