A week after coming oh-so-close to making his Albion first-team debut, Mark O’Mahony has signed a new deal which will keep at the Amex until June 2027, extending the initial three-year deal penned when he joined the club.
Since making the move across the Irish Sea from Cork City the striker has not failed to impress, reaching a double-figure tally in Premier League 2 matches, and being named in six of Roberto De Zerbi’s Premier League matchday squads.
Reflecting on this, Albion technical director David Weir said, “Mark has done really well since joining us in January last year and we’re very happy with his progress. We’re pleased to see him commit his future here.
“His form for the under-21s has seen his regular involvement with the men’s first-team squad, and this new contract is recognition of that.”
Whilst at Cork, O’Mahony made 11 first-team appearances, helping the Rebel Army to the League of Ireland First Division title, and promotion to the Irish top flight.
He has been recognised at international level at under-16, under-17 and under-19 levels, and recently earned an under-21 call-up. In 2022, O’Mahony was named the FAI’s U17 Men’s International Player of the Year.
All in all, the reported £50k transfer fee paid by Albion looks to be money very well spent. In a few years, a 4-4-2 spearheaded by all-Irish double act of Evan Ferguson and Mark O’Mahony could be a mouthwatering prospect.
