Albion defender Jim McNulty is in intensive care with a ruptured kidney.
The full horror of the injury he suffered in the second half of Saturday's home defeat by Crewe has now been revealed by the club.
McNulty, signed from Stockport last month, was visited at the Royal Sussex County Hospital yesterday by chairman Dick Knight, caretaker manager Dean White and team-mate Tommy Fraser.
Fraser said: "Poor Jim makes you realise there is more to life than football at times. He is in quite a bad way, although he was quite good in himself.
"He's got tubes coming out of him and his kidney is quite bad."
McNulty is among ten players ruled out by injury for tomorrow night's game at Bristol Rovers.
Centre half Colin Hawkins (hamstring) was able to train today and he will be in the squad but Albion cannot recall fellow defender Joel Lynch under the terms of his long-term loan deal at Nottingham Forest.
The Seagulls hope to sign a striker on loan and possibly two more players in time for the trip to Rovers.
Meanwhile, former Yeovil chief Russell Slade has emerged as a contender for the manager's job.
Slade, 48, has kept Scarborough in the Conference, guided Grimsby to the League Two play-offs and Yeovil to the League One play-offs.
He parted company with Yeovil earlier this month after four straight wins, due to differences with the Board.
Maybe NSC should sort out a get well card or something
