The 2017 UEFA European U-17 Championship Finals commence in Croatia today (Wednesday). Both England and the Republic of Ireland qualified for the 16-team tournament. Unfortunately, despite featuring in the squads for both of the qualifying rounds this season, Albion's 1st-year scholar goalkeeper Tom McGill has not been selected for the Finals. England play their first match on Thursday at 1pm against Norway.

Fellow 1st-year scholar Aaron Connolly has, however, been included in the Republic of Ireland squad which flew out from Dublin on Monday. Connolly was the leading scorer during the whole qualification phase with 7 goals in 6 matches (he scored in 5 of the 6 games). The Irish also kick-off their campaign on Thursday with a 3:30pm fixture against Serbia.

(Not so much use to you in AZ obviously, but others might be interested to hear that) this tournament is being broadcast on Eurosport in the UK.

The Ireland - Serbia match is live on Eurosport One

He was injured, wasn't he? Is he fully recovered yet?

Aaron Connolly is number 11 (left, middle row, standing on "tippy toes" as his Albion U-16 colleague Danny Cashman just noted on twitter, so as to appear a bit taller!):-

Not sure if he is fully recovered or not - named on the BENCH for the opener, which kicks off at 15.30.

Not starting but on the bench , currently 0-0 after 35 minutes , watched the England v Norway game and England after a shaky start ran out 3-1 winners , Sancho of Man City looked a superb player .

I only saw 20 minutes on my lunch break. Agree entirely - Sancho the stand out England player.

Our boy getting involved by the sounds of things, (not watching)

66 Connolly (Republic of Ireland) hits the woodwork.

69 Connolly (Republic of Ireland) has an effort on goal.
69 Gordić (Serbia) makes a save.

EDIT - RoI 1-0 down.

I think they face an uphill struggle to progress to the QFs now with Germany in their group. Judging by the UEFA stats alone they can consider themselves a little unlucky to lose. Seems a strange decision not to start with the competitions top scorer in qualifying.

I don't know what injury Connolly had, but you do wonder how fit (or match fit) he is:-

He was very lively.

Won a penalty that was not given which was a joke.

Commentators seemed impressed with him and he was probably ROI best player once on the pitch.

Whilst Tom McGill was not selected in the official England 18-man squad, he has travelled with the group to Croatia (presumably for his development and to avoid having to fly him out at short notice should one of the other goalkeepers get injured, or sick).

McGill is the 'keeper on the left in the official squad photo below (ie not number 1 or 13).

Aaron Connolly started for the Republic of Ireland in yesterday's second group game against Bosnia & Herzegovina. He was brought down for the penalty which lead to Ireland's second goal in a 2-1 win:-

The third and final group game for the Irish comes on Wednesday when they face Germany. They will probably need to beat the Krauts to advance to the knockout stages.

Just turned on to see RoI v Germany and within 30 secs Aaron Connolly booked for a blatant dive for a penalty and then Germany go 5-0 up!!
