Chris*O’Grady’s chances of a loan move away from Albion are fading.
Several clubs have expressed an interest in borrowing the out-of-favour centre-forward.
But manager Sami Hyypia is reluctant to let O’Grady go unless he brings another striker in.
The Argus revealed last week that O’Grady is wanted by League One promotion-chasers Sheffield United.
They are not alone in targeting the 28-year-old, who has started only five of Albion’s 17 Championship assignments since his £500,000 summer switch from relegated Barnsley.
Hyypia told The Argus: “There has been interest from different clubs to take Chris on loan but at the moment we are in the kind of situation that I cannot afford to let him go.
“I think there are times that we’ll need him and that’s why I am not even thinking at the moment to let him go.”
The clock is ticking for Albion to resolve the uncertainty surrounding O’Grady’s future. They have until the loan transfer window closes a week tomorrow to supplement Hyypia’s squad with the extra firepower he is seeking to help his team climb away from trouble.
Hyypia said: “If we sign a striker on loan then that might limit the appearances of other players so then we need to look at the situation again and what is best for everyone.
“It’s not that easy to bring a player who you know for sure would help us go forward. We are trying hard to find one. So far it hasn’t worked out but we still have a few days.”
