Born in North London in 58, dad was a lifelong Arsenal fan and elder brother was (and still is) a Spurs fan.
As a young lad I was regularly dragged by them to Highbury and WHL respectively but never showed any interest in either team. Occasionally went to watch Orient with my school mates...
Thank you @Easy 10 , it's always hugely encouraging when others show their appreciation.
With regard to your WIP question, I put together this collage of the construction stages of my Seagulls picture for the group at which I teach. The veneers are only 0.6mm thick, with each "waste" piece cut...
Thanks - interestingly, that was my first thought when designing the original image and it then became a toss-up between the West Pier and the Amex, and I opted for the West Pier for sentimental/family reasons. But I definitely have the Amex in mind for another piece with (as @Cotton Socks had...
@DavidinSouthampton....have yew considered setting up a Sussex Marquetry Society splinter group, with yew at the 'elm?
I'm really looking forward to the Chelsea game and just hope our lads are up fir it and aren't already on the beech, or get thwarted by the (wil)low block. I hope RDZ starts...
Not really, I just find it's a tree-mendous hobby, fairly easy to twig once you understand the basics and can then branch out into more difficult areas. I wood expect you'll soon cedar benefits of the hobby and become oak-ay at it🌳
Many thanks to everyone who’s posted for your very kind and supportive comments, I am truly overwhelmed by everyone's positive feedback and generosity of spirit.
People often ask me what is the most challenging piece I’ve produced to date and I can answer that question very easily! It’s an...
What a great idea, you're on to something there!
I also made this piece (....apologies to the good folk of NSC, it was an unbelievably thoughtless subject selection for a lifelong Albion fan, I know, but it was merely an experimental "sand shading" exercise - honest!....) so perhaps Tony and...
That's very flattering, thank you. In addition to winning the artistic merit award with the Seagulls pic, I also came first in class 2 (there are 5 classes) with this piece, Day and Night, inspired by the Dutch graphic artist, MC Escher. This took me 6 months to make and required an enormous...
Thank you, the problem is it all takes time to do it properly, including design, veneer selection, cutting, glueing, borders, sanding, polishing, waxing etc. The Seagulls picture took me 3 months to make, evenings and weekends (on and off). I completed a large portrait last year that took me 18...
It's ony a hobby and I have only ever made pictures for pleasure or family gifts to date, but as I am just about to retire I may perhaps consider doing commissions in the future. This one, however, is definitely not for sale because of it's extremely strong sentimental value to me, but thank you...
Inspired by my love of the Albion, and historic family links with Brighton and Hove, I made and entered this piece (entitled "Seagulls over Brighton's West Pier") at this year's Marquetry Society exhibition.....and it picked up 1st place for artistic merit!
It's made entirely from different...
Good post JTM. I made exactly the same point to my son after our win against United, and produced the tables below to illustrate how far we've come since the dark days of the late 90s.
It seems quite incredible that such an achievement could have been accomplished but, remarkably, it has, and...
What a great day this is going to be for everyone associated with both BHAFC and GTFC, whatever the result.
On behalf of all Albion fans I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Grimsby fans and to congratulate them on having reached the FA Cup QFs, a tremendous achievement for a mid-table League 2...
I met him at a match in Sep 2011 when I lived in Herts. He was a pal of Barnet’s chairman, and often used to attend Bees’ games. I attended a League Two game between Barnet (19th) and Accrington Stanley (15th) and sat a couple of rows behind him. The standard of football from both teams was...
As excruciatingly painful as that was to watch, I don’t begrudge Villa their win. They haven’t won away for 6 months and you can’t blame a savvy Emery and his squad from using every trick in the book to run down the clock, especially after we’ve gifted them two goals. Crucially, their time...
Good post PW. I am now wondering if we all misinterpreted Bruno’s Spanish accent in his moving farewell speech and that he actually said “Once I see gold….”!
For the entire group to have resigned en masse so quickly suggests that this was all under negotiation with Chelsea for quite a...
