I’ve come to these quite late but have loved the first two. I have trouble concentrating on ‘serious’ audiobooks so may listen to them after I’ve read the complete chronicles. I think I will read the Palliser novels after Barchester. Henry James is another writer I somehow haven’t read yet.

I think he was one of the very few people (there were possibly two others) for whom she didn’t have at best a sneering contempt and at worst a psychopathic disregard. I suspect that her cynicism was the same as ever, though.

I will read more stuff from Rachel Kushner, I think, but I slightly struggled with a book written from the first person perspective of a character I really disliked. I don’t think she was meant to be likeable but I still found her grating.
