I’ve come to these quite late but have loved the first two. I have trouble concentrating on ‘serious’ audiobooks so may listen to them after I’ve read the complete chronicles. I think I will read the Palliser novels after Barchester.
Henry James is another writer I somehow haven’t read yet.
I think he was one of the very few people (there were possibly two others) for whom she didn’t have at best a sneering contempt and at worst a psychopathic disregard. I suspect that her cynicism was the same as ever, though.
I will read more stuff from Rachel Kushner, I think, but I slightly struggled with a book written from the first person perspective of a character I really disliked. I don’t think she was meant to be likeable but I still found her grating.
James - Percival Everett
This completes the Booker Prize shortlist for me. I think this is the one I like most. Also enjoyed Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood and The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden.
As a neutral I would love to see the Bengals in the playoffs. To have Burrow, Chase and Higgins and to be relying on other teams to lose seems ridiculous to me.
Going to be a close finish between the Commanders and Eagles. 30-28 Philadelphia with just under four minutes left. It’s been a really enjoyable season for Washington; plenty of hope for the future!
