The convention (supported by all three parties represented on the City Council) has been to allow the largest party to form the administration (Leader of the Council and Lead Members for all service areas). I can't see that changing, unless there is a major, major crisis that requires a formal...
One of the consequences of proportional representation might easily be the restructuring of the two political parties who have benefitted historically from the first past the post system. The result might be this:-
Pro-Europe Conservative 158
Centre Left Labour 133
UKIP 81
Eurosceptic...
The prediction is based on the BBC's exit poll being exactly right in predicting that the Tories will win 316 seats. If they only win 315, the prediction is that Lewes stays LibDem.
My prediction is that Baker will win and the BBC exit poll will prove to be significantly wrong. The Tories...
I thought the Private Eye version had a gaga Macmillan failing to complete the sentence "I like ..." and the onlookers thought he had said "Alec ..."
And that's how Alec Douglas-Home became Prime Minister.
Some of us are old enough to remember Harold Macmillan's resignation, when the Tories were unable to find a remotely competent or popular Member of Parliament in their ranks who could be trusted with the job. So they gave it to the 14th Earl of Home and hurriedly found him a safe Scottish seat...
The Lib Dems will dump the Tories and shack up with Labour, even though this will be a minority government. The SNP won't vote this coalition down, not because they have done a deal with Labour, but because they know this gets rid of the Tories in government. If the Tories do a deal with...
A couple of chums of mine went on the show a few years back. They presented themselves as people who really enjoyed hang gliding and knew that Croatia had superb facilities. They ended up moving to ... er ... Cooksbridge.
But the hang gliding was good. And cheap.
They certainly campaigned against the planning application for the Newhaven incinerator, but they had previously been active supporters of the Waste Local Plan that identified incineration as the best way forward.
In fairness to the local Tories, the ONLY politician to campaign consistently against the incinerator in Newhaven was Tory Councillor Mike Murphy from Seaford. But he's now retired from local politics.
No. The pro-incineration policy was adopted by ESCC when the Lib Dems were the biggest party on the Council. In line with their NIMBY principles, though, they wanted the incinerator built in Rother district.
I remember Norman Baker speaking at a meeting in my local village hall that had been called to campaign against landfilling and landraising in the area. He made a rousing speech, telling everyone that incineration was a better solution than either.
He only got elected in the first place because supporters of the Referendum Party split the Tory vote in the Lewes constituency. UKIP may indeed save him - although other factors include his reputation as an excellent constituency MP, the large number of Labour supporters who will vote...
I presume that the Lib Dems have decided by now which of the two main parties they will bless with the power to make a government. Since SNP and UKIP MPs will be discounted in the calculations, as will Sinn Fein, my guess is that a Labour - Lib Dem government is already in the bag and there is...
