I'm always intrigued (and slightly amused) by the very old photographs of crowds watching football matches - pictures in sepia; the men (mostly) neatly standing in rows, mostly wearing hats or flat caps and jackets, with the name of the opponents and the date written on a card...
They look like plastic tubes placed around young trees, saplings, shrubs etc., to protect them from being damaged/eaten by animals who might find them a bit tasty.
At the SCFA ground at Culver Road, there's a replica owl (plastic? wood? stuffed? dunno) on the end of the pole that supports the netting which stops the high balls from wrecking the neighbours greenhouses. Being stupid stupid buggers, I bet the birds fall for it.
