[Technology] Using an immersion heater instead of a gas boiler for heating water?

I had one of these fitted last year. My gas usage went down from 18Mw to 12Mw and the heating works much better, I hope you find the same. Gas is still 1/4 the price of electricity, not wise to heat water this way.

[Politics] Is it time for the UK to become a republic?

I think we need to start with the HOL first, it's a hideos anomoly full of cronies. I'd also bar lawyers from the commons. Personally, I like the idea of the HOL being replaced with a jury-like system decided by lottery. At least that would be representative (although we don't really like all...

[News] Government offing £350 a month to host Ukrainian refugees.

I don't think that taking in a refugee will affect anyone's council tax - refugees will be exempt. I think this is a good idea as in empowers us as individuals to do something directly if we chose to do so. It may be better than just placing people in "centres" or leaving them to fend for...

    Proms. Last night.

Written in Felpham and inspired by the view of the trundle from next to the Earl of March pub in Lavant (he was visiting a lady friend). He was also tried for sedition at Chichester Crown Court. Definitely revolutionary. It's a poem, part of a larger work, never meant to be a hymn.

    Scientific fraud in medical research

Thanks for that HWT. I guess there is nothing in that that was not previously known but the chair's comment at the start of questions was very telling, someting like it was only the tip of the iceberg. I remember having an appraisal years ago when single author papers carried a high currency and...

    [Politics] Brexit

As do most countries. Just like any "investment" past performance is no guarantee of future results especially when confounded by unexpected events. The tories seem as competent as the German CDU/SPD government at the moment (e.g...

[Music] Jerry Garcia / The Grateful Dead - where to start?

This! Skeletons from the Closet is a GD approved compilation and a good intro. Jerry Garcia's blue grass stuff is also pretty good. A great version of wild horses. Saw them at Wembley, fantastic. After you've gone through all the GD stuff, try Frank Zappa. The lock down will be over...

    Mandatory vaccination?

Andrew Wakefield. He did rather too many things wrong. I also agree that questioning is fundamental. I had a large grant from a pharma company that wanted to relicence a relatively common drug for another purpose. One of my best publications was a negative result on that study. Not had any...

    Mandatory vaccination?

I realy don't think you understand how science and the publications of results works if you believe that the scientific community has blind confidence in certain theories and is feeding itself. The free thinkers are those that challenge the prevailing view, cf Copernicus. Do you not understand...

I love that wikipedia sees the future .... "On August 27th 2019, Connolly scored his first senior goal in a 2–1 away win over Bristol Rovers in the EFL Cup.[7] He made his league debut for Brighton four days later, coming on as a substitute for Neal Maupay in the 66th minute of a 4–0 defeat...
