40 years ago today!
Who remembers these departure boards at Brighton station?
I have a fond memory of the clacking noise made by these and the black and white departures boards that followed these, when they changed.

Yes. I remember them. The clacking noise went on for a few seconds as the stations, kind of, all dropped off the board.

Pretty certain that old train board is at the National Rail Museum in York

Used to get the train from Seaford to Brighton for school every day. Train used to arrive on platform 9 with the old slam doors, so you could open them and hop off whilst the train was still moving.
Only problem is when you give your seat to a woman and she hasn't shut the door properly and you fall out whilst it is moving... like my grandad did!

Where was the WHSmith kiosk located?

I remember the kiosk in the corner of Hove station, not Smiths, but the same guy (maybe he’s still there?) every day.

We did this a few years ago, well worth it.

The most curious thing..

Or if you misjudged the speed, end up splattered on the platform and then trodden over in the rush.

It was in front of platform 3 and 4.

And on the trains home to Seaford from school at Lewes, having a dump in the toilets and then trying to time the flush (which simply evacuated your evacuation onto the tracks) for when you were going over Newhaven level crossing.

We just looked at that tour, as we quite fancied it. Sadly, not one of the seven dates on offer are at the weekend, so pretty useless to those who work. :(

I remember that for years it was the only place you could buy Cadburys Mint Crisp.
You could only buy them from a vending machine on one of the platforms.

I thought that, too, but according to a post on 'My Brighton and Hove' site, it appears not:

"The arrivals and departures board featured in the picture is now in fact owned by Sir William McAlpine who lives in Buckinghamshire and has it in his railway museum. He is also the Chairman of the Hythe, Winchealsea and Romney Railway. On his land in Bucks he has a full sized 1.5 mile long railway line, yes 4’8.5″ gauge, on which he runs a steam train and tender. He has a signal box that was also for the chop, and a railway station with waiting room which he had moved lock stock and barrel and re-erected at his home, and a platform ticket machine. He opens his station and runs the trains with the support of many amateur helpers for charity events during the year. We go there regularly and have many rides on the train, which are free once you are in."
