Going For Gold Irish presenter Henry Kelly has died at the age of 78.

Who can ever forget Lars from Sweden battling it out with Ruud from the Netherlands in the late eighties on BBC1 just after the first airing of Neighbours? They don't make programmes like that anymore.

RIP Henry.

The 1988 Grand Final had possibly the biggest drop off from 1st prize to 2nd prize in TV history.

1st prize - a trip to Korea to watch the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.
2nd prize - "As series runner-up, you'll be able to enjoy the 1988 Olympics on your remote controlled 24 inch colour television."

Well, both Henry and his brother Mathew will be sorely missed.

Such a talented family.

RIP Henry.

Henry Kelly was gold.
I have such fond memories of Going for Gold. Used to watch it as a student regularly. It was banal but such fun, and what a delivery from the host.
"Let's play four in a row", "it's the Beat the Buzzer round", and so on.

Ireland has transitioned from being a land of insular, potato-eating terrorists to an outward-looking, exemplary EU state. It was Henry Kelly and his Euroquiz that led the way.

Well this takes me back. I guess he’s finally answered the question (usually posed to a smiling Norwegian called Knut) of

“Will you play or pass?”
