This is one cultural thing I have not been able to grasp: why do many people in the UK hate cyclists?

Everywhere else its like "its great for your body, the environment, its pleasant to do, it leads to less fatal accidents in traffic compared to driving, less traffic congestion for those who need to go by car" but in the UK its "VERMIN!!!".

Genuinely curious because I can't get my head around it.
It's because they are told to by the tabloid press and presumably various twitter accounts.

Brainwashing is straightforward right? drip drip drip. A little bit every day for years on end. You can teach the populace to demonise basically anybody

In the UK especially cities everyone is in such a rush for some reason. I plod around observing speed limits as I’ve always said to myself if died in a road accident that was my fault I would be pissed.
The road anger is off the scale in the Uk mental people flashing lights trying to overtake on narrow roads just to get to their destination two minute early.
I live in London and it’s just not suited for large groups of cyclists.

No mate Holloway Rd, London. I’ve still got the wing mirror taped up it’s on the list of jobs to do. Why what happened at the Bridge?
Post match Shouting match between car driver and Lycra man at front of queue. Lights changed to green but they carried on not moving. Tail back of blaring car horns.

Exactly, My gripe is you have no recourse, I’ve seen them kick cars leaving dents all because they know they will get away with it.
How would you resolve the “recourse” issue?

Obviously there are good and bad cyclists, yet when I’m minding my own business and a cyclist dressed like Bradley f***ing Wiggins takes my wing mirror off in his haste to go through a red light and not even stop to offer an apology or pay for the damage then yes road vermin.
So you accept there are good and bad but you want to describe all of your fellow Albion fans who cycle to games as "vermin" because of something that happened in London?

I'm always having to deal with shit drivers (running through lights, blocking side roads, cutting people up, speeding) but I don't generalise about everyone in a car. I see way more bad driving than I do bad cycling. When I'm in my car. Paying my vehicle tax.

Anyway, do you have anything to do with the bike sheds disappearing? If not I'm sure there's plenty of places where there's existing conversation slagging off cyclists.

anyone contacted the club about it? I assume that there hasn’t been any communication from the club? Maybe it’s temporary………..The thread seems to have wandered off track

Will post any reply here.

A very aggressive country with bizarre hates, a car is king entitlement. I know perfectly sane, law abiding folk who loath cyclists on country roads riding in single file close to kerb.

Because if you are in a car you have to slow down for a short while before you can pass me on my bike. NOTHING should have the temerity to impinge on car drivers' right to speed unfettered along the highway.

Yep, same applies to travellers, foreigners, different ethnicities, woke, cops, tradesmen, delivery drivers, lorries, neighbours, youths, old people... always someone to hate. I find it really weird. Why can so many people have so much pent up hate in them?

Firstly, we don't have good enough road provision for cyclists to have their own space most of the time so they either end up having to share the road with cars, which drivers hate, or they end up sharing the pavement with walkers, which pedestrians hate. Like most things in this country, it's about crumbling old fashioned infrastructure.

There is also a pretentious subculture of cyclists here that I don't think has quite translated to Europe in the same way (in that they, from my experience, seem to have been self-confined to cycling as a hobby and not as a means of transport). The centrist-dad NIMBY Bradley Wiggins wannabes who buy all of the thousands of pounds of gear and live on the highest of horses (with two wheels). The reality is that in London everyone uses either the TFL or Lime Bikes and no one has an issue with that for the most part, it's the stereotype outlined above that causes the knee jerk anger.

And to be fair, it is some of the wankiest most annoying shit - imagine sitting in the office, going through your emails and some bloke is getting unwrapped from his Rapha lycra and bike shoes that he has to wear to signal to everyone that he's a real cyclist on the desk next to you.

Still, Vermin is a pretty far jump off from that, imo, valid annoyance,

Cycling as a recreation and for commuting is huge on the continent.

Yes obviously, sorry if my wording was not clear.

The serious cycling subculture in Europe is, in my understanding from family living in Berlin and Amsterdam, less about getting the train 70% of the way to your office and cycling your race bike into the office in the middle of the city on a Monday morning and more about enjoying it as a recreational hobby. Cycling clubs are fab and massive on the continent and that's fine. Cycling as a commute is there to be a commute not an extension of your expensive hobby.

I'm sure everyone who has worked in an office in the last ten years has had some pretentious wanker turn up every day in lycra, wheeling their expensive race bikes in to the working space so all can see.

Update from supporter services:

Thanks for taking the time to write to us and for raising your concerns.

I have asked our projects team to give more information on the situation with the covered bike rack by the train station, once I hear back I will let you know.

Just to make you aware, there is also a covered bike rack located in the upper tier drop car park (south side).
