Well Huw Edwards walked out of Court after being convicted of being a nonce so not sure you can bang this fella up for lamping a bloke in the street and causing no serious industry.

He should be kicked out of Parliament though.
But what if he’s a good constituency MP, who, like most of us, has made a mistake?

Mmmmm......

I'd not want him to be my MP. And as a Labour man, were it my constituency, I would have been one of those who put him into parliament

One would think that immediate resignation is now his only honourable option remaining.
The cynic in me would question if Starmer would want a by-election at this point, however 'safe' the seat might be?

Let him serve the sentence, probably less than a month with good behaviour given the prison overcrowding issue, then we get a modern day parable in forgiveness and redemption as he's welcomed back into the Labour fold.

Variation on a theme, but I've been told by a very well connected local person, that all the 'nonce busting' mullarkey at Hove station won't go to court either.

It's nothing to do with Starmer. He could ask a Labour MP to resign but he'd have no sway over Amesbury. And besides, the length of the sentence is such that a recall petition will almost certainly be activated - and likely passed.

BBC news says he is appealing the sentence. Will probably be before a Crown Court judge this week (if not this afternoon).
I'd be surprised if it gets overturned, it "feels" about right from the sentencing guidelines (here).
The offence is aggravated by him being pissed up and, IMO, being an MP who would be expected to have higher standards of behaviour.

Why are there plenty of occasions when fighting in the street doesn't warrant a custodial sentence and his did?

Congratulations Lenny, you're understanding of the situation and options available is truly remarkable, but don't let facts get in the way of your opinion.

Let's hope it's a different 'well connected' source for your second one

Because he carried on when the chap was on the floor and unable to defend himself. The sentence is appropriate.

I live in Spain and believe that here he wouldn’t go to prison. I am fully in favour of this approach as 10 weeks achieves absolutely nothing, is extrememely expensive and a complete waste of time and money. I believe any sentence under 2 years here is suspended so all this shenanigans would be avoided. I think that is a good thing.

A 10 week sentence might not achieve anything, but it might act as a deterrent to the next thug who is thinking of whacking someone around the chops.
