It’s all about air bnb and holiday homes.

like here there is a huge problem with housing for locals and as so many air bnb( owner billionaire now a big buddy with the Fuhrer and his swasticar chum) lie empty for long periods, locals are getting upset

perfectly sensible.

also growth of all inclusive
hotels and resorts, many tourists are spending all their time on resorts and not spending money at local restaurants or shops.
a perfect storm

Ultimately it’s all about the availability of affordable housing. Air b n b letting is a huge issue but of course it’s the locals, not the tourists, that are renting these out and benefitting from them.

Holiday homes are a bit of a red herring as they are largely built in holiday ‘communities’ and are priced so high that even if the market dropped by 50% they would be unaffordable by local people.

Spain has a woeful record of building affordable housing - Mallorca (scene of a lot of demos) has not built any for over 20 years and still have no plans to do so. It suits politicians to blame tourists as this diverts the attention from their own failings.

There is a real need to develop other industries to reduce the over reliance on often low paid tourist related jobs. However, in the meantime, all the many Spanish people that I know do not support the anti tourist demos and are very concerned about their economic impact

The Fatherland
AirBnB started with the idea of people renting out a spare room for tourists. Initially a hobbiest thing but totally destroyed by buy to holiday let and then embraced by AirBnB. Scrap it.
I’m now of the view it should be scrapped as well.

It's all very bizarre.
"Let's build our entire economy around tourism and then hate them for coming here"
Even the badly behaved Brits stuff is largely their fault. They created these huge party areas in order to flog ridiculous amounts of booze to 18 year olds, basically allowed lawlessness in them and then cried when the obvious happened. If you're gonna offer a free fishbowl to every passing punter then you can't really complain about alcohol fuelled mayhem.

And I say all this as someone who loves and admires Spain/Spanish people/Spanish culture as much as anyone. But they need to get a grip about this stuff.
They’re just in transition.

Things have changed. They have too many tourists, causing a number of problems, so why not go after a different market and discourage the oinks for fewer but higher spending ones that have some manners too? Spain isn’t alone in doing this. Everywhere is.

Has anyone had problems entering Spain for holidays recently? I keep reading about the need to have a letter of invitation to enter Spain, some articles even suggest you have to give bank details, have travel insurance etc. All very confusing. Do you know of anyone denied entry through a lack of this?
No problems but I do have a Irish passport 🇮🇪☘️

But those all inclusive resorts are still bringing money and taxes into the local economy.

But those all inclusive resorts are still bringing money and taxes into the local economy.
But mostly to the big conglomerates who own them rather than local people ( I have friends who work in the financial sector in Europe who are amazed at the amount of monies that do NOT go back into local communities.)

even when we go all inclusive we always visit local restaurants and bars to at least give something back.
so many brits we know and meet on holiday take the view “ we have paid for our meals and drinks therefore we will stay put…sod em”

Hasn’t everyone got an Irish granny or grandpa 😆 get yourself an Irish passport. But on topic I had no issues I came back from Spain yesterday on a British passport. I did notice a few British signs ripped down so there is some underlying anger but most people were very friendly. Spain has improved imo I love to move there for good, England’s a mess.
