And that's the kind of mantra I'd expect from a Brighton fan of about 5 minutes standing.

Let's be clear - we don't, get on with Bournemouth, and never have. If Bournemouth trump our Europa league appearance of 2 years ago by qualifying for the Champions League, I am going to be very pissed off.
There are advantages and disadvantages of playing in the CL and EL.

My Malmö FF supporting friends often prefer the EL adventures because you go to less sanitised places. The biggest clubs in Europe are often very sanitised, touristy entities. Most matchday experiences will be very similar and the results will be shite. Of course Brighton and Bournemouth would have a better chance of doing something in the CL, but it would be impossible to win it at the first time playing there.

Meanwhile, Europa/Conference league brings a good chance of winning a title. Obviously the idea of Brighton facing off with Real Madrid or Barcelona is... maybe the ultimate dream, but fans of a team winning the Europa League final will have more fun than fans of teams losing 5-0 to Madrid in a CL group stage.

But yeah I might be grasping for straws... qualifying a couple of times for the CL is a big step towards becoming a long-term highly competitive club, so that'd be nice. Also allows a club to keep all the best players, which is otherwise nearly impossible unless the club is either a giant or utterly shite.

Are we supposed to dislike Bournemouth? Dammit I must have missed that memo, feeling rather embarrassed now.....

Please everyone give them an extra-loud boo from me tomorrow night as I've got 40 odd years of Bournemouth-hating to catch up on..... :lolol:

You missed the cheating, the homophobic chanting at their tiny stadium and the Smug years I take it?

Shall I give them a cheer from you rather than a boo?

My guess is that we won't catch Forest or Chelsea. Which would put us in a mini-league of 5 teams with Bournemouth, Villa, Fulham and Newcastle.

If 8th and higher get "Europe" then we need to finish above at least two of those four teams.

We could obvs finish above all of them or none of them...!
Been saying for a while that we need a couple of weeks where we do our bit and the other results of teams around us go our way. Could have done with Forest getting something yesterday but wasn’t a terrible weekend for us. All of which makes tomorrow nights game so pivotal I think.

Manchester City, Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Bournemouth.
Who would I want most to fail?

The four teams other than Bournemouth*.

* This doesn't mean I want Bournemouth to succeed, but when forced to decide......

Missed the chanting, yes. But I do now recall the 90th minute Elphick handball outside the box that they got a dodgy penalty for, that was very annoying. And smug was very smuggy, indeed. But I'd probably have to hate every club in the league if these were the criteria.

Anyway, please do give an extra boo for I.

In the final reckoning the bigger clubs do tend to win out, size of squad, inherent quality, experience and expectation usually pay off in the final straight. I thus expect the CL five to be Liverpool, Arsenal, City, Newcastle with Chelsea grabbing the last spot ahead of Forest at the death. I think Villa will keep struggling for as long as they are in this years CL. But it is all close and certainly all to play for, and I'm usually wrong in these predictions.

Lets compare the UCL with the UEL, in fact it's Villa v BHA.
In 2023/4 we all enjoyed trips to Marseille, Amsterdam, Athens & Rome, places I'd never been to before.
in 2024/5 Villa have been to Bern (Switzerland), Brugge, RB Leipzig & Monaco but also entertained Bayern, Bologna, Juventus & Celtic due to the way the new rules of the competition are. Next up, by coincidence, is Brugge again.
Also going to show Villa in the Conference of 2023/4 when they played Legia Warszawa, Zrinjski (Bosnia), Alkmaar followed by knout-out games with Ajax (who Brighton sent down), LOSC (Lille) finally losing to Olympiacos.
Because the new UEFA competitions are seeded you will always get 2 teams from the four groups of greatest, greats, have beens and who are you.
So looking at the above list, I think we had the best deal with 'big' clubs that were beatable (proven).

Sam Dean of the DT thinks we’ll finish above Villa in 8th.

I reckon our squad is as good as anydody. It’s the mental side that comes into play, if our young manager, who nobody knows about but from memory achieved quite remarkable results in his previous clubs can prove himself, who knows? He obviously has the motivational skills required. This could be the greatest season ever in our history! Yes I am pissed and yes I am going to bed. Goodnight.
