Not this again, it’s technology deal with it and embrace it.
You have no idea what people are doing on their phones. The world is at our fingertips it’s marvellous.

You may be assuming everyone is on social media talking bollocks have you stopped to think the girl in the corner is applying for a job or the scruffy fella is a builder looking up materials for his next job (something I do regularly).
Or a family member has messaged about a problem they may have or simply asking about Sunday dinner and who’s going?
Labelling everyone you see on a phone a phone zombie is outdated nonsense.
It’s probably fair to say most will be looking for the next ‘hit’ rather than writing to their MP or reading Tolstoy. Nope, it’s an addiction and like all addictions it’s unhealthy in ways we simply don’t understand yet (but the evidence is growing, and not in a cheery sense I’m led to believe!)

There are lots of articles and information online about doom scrolling. Look it up. It’s not good and I agree, 20 years ago I didn’t need to look down at a piece of technology for hours on end, and frankly I wonder what its starting to add to peoples lives. Particuarly since it has been so manipulated for policitcal gain lately…

Next time you are walking past a queue of slow moving traffic see how many drivers are using their phones, as soon as some drivers stop at the lights or in a stationary queue they immediately pick up their phone.
This is zombie behaviour and also breaking the law obviously.

Using a phone when it’s not bothering anyone else is fine, but put it away when driving unless the vehicle has hands free for calls.

The three groups of mobile phone users I hate most are:

a) People who are constantly looking at their phones, or texting, while walking along the pavement. With their heads down, and their attention solely on their screen, they are oblivious to everyone else, and seem to expect the rest of us to move out of their way. Arrogant selfish ****s.

b) People pushing a pram but ignoring their baby - even when it is crying - because they love their phone so much more. Given the importance of the first 3 years for a child's cognitive development and acquisition of communication skills, I fear that we have already spawned a generation of youngsters whose brains and intellects are undeveloped because of lack of parental engagement and interaction when they were babies/toddlers, because mum/dad were always on their phones.

c) Those, as mentioned above, who have their tedious phone conversations conducted via 'speaker', so that the rest of the train carriage or bus can hear the tinny chat. I read somewhere that this trend for 'speaker' conversations was started by that God-awful vacuity Kim Kardashian, who has sadly become a role model for millions of young women - the sort of air-heads who would wear a stinking fresh dog turd round their neck if 'Kim' wore one.

Brighton factually.....
Our daughter scrolls for hours, and her mood changes watching endless clips of fake people doing basically nothing.
Her mental health suffers, the wife bans the phone for a few days and we see a marked improvement in her moods.
You can't ban them forever for using the phone though especially at15, we have spoken to other parents and they have similar issues.

I do feel for the younger generation, who are it seems being targeted on social media to scroll, scroll, scroll.
Covid did not help their generation either, increasing the reliance on the phone to somewhat connect with the outside world.

I actually hate customers calling me I mutter can’t you just send a fuking message like everyone else 🤣
Totally agree driving and phone usage is disgraceful unless hands free & then you are still distracted.

Definitely this!

There’s got to be some long term negative impact to the endless scrolling..

It might be a regional thing, but I’ve noticed the scrolling is worse whenever I get back in the UK. There’s always at least one female (with a wide age range) scrolling through makeup, fashion or random tutorials with the sound on loud. They’re sometimes speeded up so they can consume more.

So you’ve got the negative impact of the scrolling, plus some grifter pushing out “expert” content and everyone wanting to be a social media star.

I've never seen anything like what it is like in Saudi. Doesn't matter what job they have, retail staff, customs officers, government staff, they are all always on their phones. They will be on their phone behind a desk completely ignoring the queue of people. I just go straight up to them now and ask for whatever I need.

Worst drivers in the world and all on their phones. Never ever see a phone cradle or Bluetooth, always in their hands.

Strict rules in my house. No phones at dinner table. No one breaks it and we eat together (or whoever is home) every meal apart from Saturday night tv dinners. My best part of the day.

Limits set on my kids phones so they only have 3 hours max per day.

I use my phone too much.

People are so addicted to their phones these days, it seems incredibly dystopian to me... and can't be healthy for the mind?

On a bus or train - it seems 90% of people will be on their phones for the entire duration of the journey, when it is such a great opportunity to watch the world around them through the windows.

Even in pubs, at restaurants, even when they have company... people are on their phones, or at the very least constantly checking them.

I go out of my way to not use my phone except when required, as I feel as I'm missing out on life when doing so - but with that has come an acute awareness of how so many people can't resist constantly checking their phones, and often become completely absent for minutes, while browsing whatever they are addicted to looking at.

Boredom can be a beautiful thing, as it allows the mind to wonder. Are people now so scared of being bored, even for a few seconds - or is it that they are so addicted to the dopamine rushes designed by their apps, that they literally cannot resist it anymore?

Whatever it is - this cannot be good for people. I wonder if it some kind of crises that we're not fully aware of yet.

Actually I should have said London vs the UK. It’s what I first notice when I get on the train coming from an airport, and in fairness the very last people I saw were two girls with Dubai tags in the cases, scrolling videos with the sound on.

It’s interesting that Japan is so advance technology wise, but when I visited I didn’t notice as many people scrolling.. maybe a cultural thing.

Three solutions

1. Shout ‘beeeeeppp!’ as they’re approaching you (with the added bonus it shocks them and they drop their phone!)

2. Kidnap and give to a family of apes to raise in a jungle like Tarzan.

3. Download and Play some thrash metal on loudspeaker next to them until they turnoff.

Always remember, you can be annoying too. Ask anyone on NSC… ;)
