Posting in support of how and why Bozza has pulled The Middle East Thread (or similar title) this is why like many myself included use NSC looking for genuine advice. We are regular users of train travel and for us it Northern, Southern or AWC. Now on every operating company adverts asking you for Best Priced Tickets 🎟️. Now we can and have on Advance tickets got great prices for two from Macclesfield, Euston,Tube and then Victoria via Lewes to Seaford often under £90 return for two with Snr Railcard all on The Trainline App, so are they the best ticket 🎟️ provider.

The only place/way I've gotten cheaper than the Trainline App is by going in and speaking to someone in a ticketing office who managed to suss out better ways with which rail card to purchase.
But I rate the Train line app, and it does split tickets now as well. Also can use it to log the tickets into Sap Concur if anyone does expenses/business travel which is neat

You can get the same tickets on any of the rail operators’ apps and you don’t pay the fee that Trainline charge.
Indeed. And if you have an Amex card and buy via LNER - which like the rest sells tickets for all the train companies - you get 10% back.

Edit: you have to add the offer to your card first.

I have recently used TrainPal on a suggestion from someone on here.... resulted for Everton and Leicester for example, in both cases cheapest I could find online, only a few quid here and there, but definitely cheaper.

Has anyone tried using these sites to find the best routes/timings, then buy the same tickets fee-free from a train company site? I don’t think they’re ‘special’ tickets - they’re just working out how to split the route and maximise the discounts available, but might be wrong. Not used TrainPal but people raving about TrainLine has always annoyed me as it’s really no easier than the operators’ websites but adds its own fee on top.

TrainSplit is excellent too. Sometimes the journeys take longer but major savings can be made. I commute from Sussex to Liverpool every week and it makes a big difference.

Fares are still obscene though in the main

I've used Southern, Trainline and Trainsplit. I found the latter to be a bit cheaper. The only downside is that if there are two travelling using different Railcards, it's difficult to get seats together - although this is an issue they're trying to solve. @trueblue - thanks for the Amex card tip.

Has anyone else found the National Rail app update painful? Default is Live Trains; always freezing and crashing.

I recently bought 2 return tickets Polegate to London Victoria at £7 return each using the Southern app during a recent sale.

I’ve recently had to start going to Reading 3 times a week on GWR. The journey can be as quick as 25 minutes but costs £90 return, or £60 if I split and go on the very slightly slower train.

I’ve started buying weekly passes online and get loaded onto my smart card.

Annoyingly I cannot get the site working properly on mobile devices, so have to hunt down my laptop late at night when I remember I need to buy it. Also, I don’t know why the smart card can’t be loaded into my phone wallet. Annoying, though not as annoying as the cost!
