Dear font of all knowledge, the Mrs and I have decided we are going to do a drive holiday down to Annecy / French alps regional (have a week there) then instead of heading straight back we’d drive into Germany and have 3 or 4 nights in a couple of places on the way back to the channel. So I’m looking for advice on which areas the great people of NSC have been and stayed. Otherwise it’s me and google as none of our friends have gone beyond Berlin, Munich or Hamburg

Does that mean you've not actually been? Berlin and Munich are amazing!

I'd second Cologne although I've only been in December (5 times).
On these trips we've stopped in Lille and Ghent, both nice. Going the other side of Paris we done a trip to Rouen is great if you need a stop from Newhaven - Dieppe.

If you’re going to Annecy, do try to get to Chamonix. The mountain in the golden sunset is Mont Blanc.

Food-wise, try a Raclette and Tomme de chèvre.

Lovely catherdal. Modern though, as we pummelled the original one to bits in the last war.
This is not true. It was badly damaged but still standing.

It also contains my favorite work of art, Gerhard Richter’s window. At face value it’s amazing to look at, especially on a sunny day. But what seals the deal for me is the reasoning as to the design, and especialy his reason for not wanting to make an ersatz copy of the original stained glass window. It also utilized mathematics to help position the glass blocks. In short, it’s something I can related to on many levels.

I also believe that many of the original windows survived, which pours more doubt on Cowfolds comments.

That window is beautiful.

Aside from the obvious Hamburg is a very beautiful city, as are Dortmund and Berlin, only been there for either boxing or football, but did a little bit of sightseeing in all three and wasn’t disappointed or underwhelmed.

Have a great time 👍

Thanks for suggestions - we’ve been to Berlin before and have plans for Hamburg. We’ve done most of Belgium and Northern France before. So maybe we’ll do 3 days in Black Forest and the 3 days in Cologne
