This may or may not be not be an interesting thread….
I was on a little wormhole this morning after reading about the latest RIBA winner (A Japanese firm).
When reading about one of their buildings in Lens I was surprised to learn the city has a population of 32k. Surely the teams ground is bigger, I thought? And it is, approx 38k.
Now, I know different countries metropolitan areas are made up differently and I also realise that every club has different catchment areas, but I still found that surprising, especially given their history- mostly a top tier side and have had decent forays in Europe.
Anyone else with more of these? Ever been somewhere where the football ground looms over the town and you’ve wondered where all the people must come from?

Not a big ground or successful club but Fylde is a weird one. Have no idea if there’s even a town but it’s just in a random field somewhere on the road to Blackpool.

Having done a lot of work up there Fylde is a borough rather than a town that includes Lytham, St Annes and Frecklington.

If they were ever to get in the league you'd have Preston, Fylde, Blackpool and Fleetwood all within 21 miles of each other.

Club doesn't come to mind, but didn't someone up north build a stadium for a team that went on to be relegated out of the league.

Nieve Petruzziello (Stuntpegg) covered the story of Darlington FC in one of her videos. The new stadium, the Reynolds Arena, had a 25000 capacity for an average home crowd of 5000. Original club, went into administration and expelled from the Football Association. New phoenix club, started in Tier 9 of the football pyramid.

Burslem.

Population: 7k
Vale Park: 15,695
Remember when we went there in 2002 as Champions, the local old bill reckoned the combined fire limits of all of the local pubs couldn’t accommodate the Albion travelling support.

I know of one particular travelling party who adjourned to a local curry house, not sure they went with the Bad News retort of “200 pints of Lager and 4 popadoms” 😂

Darlington? Darlington’s owner was George Reynolds who did porridge for various misdemeanours. One was being caught with £500,000 in the boot of his car in a money laundering gig. “Just popping out to the shops luv to buy a few beers and a bottle of wine.” didn’t quite cut it.

It was definitely Darlington. Commander was the first to post it so I edited mine saying the same thing. Reynolds was a bad, bad boy. Wife's family are from Bishop Auckland and knew his "rep".

For all his foibles when I interviewed him on the wireless, August 1999, that back then EPL Middlesborough were effectively pricing local working class men and their families out of going to football, and in the new Darlington stadium he wanted to provide affordable professional football for the masses locally.

Just a shame it wasn’t with his money 🙈
