I much preferred the Police Squad series it was based on, where the actors were more deadpan than in the films and the comedy was much subtler, and ultimately funnier. I thought Frank Drebin's character was goofed up a little bit too much in the films and the charm of the TV programmes was diluted too much.

I see the occasional Police Squad clip and it's standing up really well. It was a brilliant piece of work by all involved.

Oh come on. Nobody knows - I doubt even the cast and director knew if it worked until they made an edit. It might be really good, it might be poor, or - as with most things - it might be a matter of taste.

All I’m saying is I think the lead casting will work, then I gave a bit of evidence why based on videos - which you may or may not have enjoyed - but I feel are representative of his casting.

The film might be shit, but I love the franchise and I see the lead casting as good. I’m optimistic.

So no; not everyone “knows” this will be shit.

Police Squad was a masterpiece and originally took the slot previously taken by The Streets of San Francisco. It flopped in the US but was a hit here. The films were a dumbed down (or up) version to win over the US market and I feel a lot was lost.
My best mate used to stay at mine every Saturday to watch it, then a few months later it would run on London telly, so we'd stay at his Gran's every Saturday as she lived the other side of the downs. I think we did the whole routine 3 years in a row.
I can only imagine the remake will be dogshite.

I seem to remember Police Squad being on at about 7pm or something like that. I stumbled upon it one day when I was a kid and was really thrown by the way it looked so old. Was it some long-forgotten classic? I started taping it with whatever spare VHS cassette was to hand and soon my brother and dad were obsessed with it too. But there was no information available to us to explain what the hell we were watching and that only added to the joy of the thing.

Thanks but not thanks. I really don’t care enough about a film to risk losing £50 over. And if I did, I certainly wouldn’t let Rotten Tomatoes decide.

You do know what Rotten Tomatoes is…? It’s just an aggregator of professional reviews, nothing more. Then it gives a percentage figure based on how many of those critic reviews were positive. Ie. 80% fresh meaning 80% of reviews are positive.

So why wouldn’t you want Rotten Tomatoes to decide? It’s okay that you didn’t know what it is. Nobody is perfect and I’m happy to help.

But yes, we shall see. I’m hopeful.
