Mitoma is not just our best player he brings in a lot of money to the club through the Japanese fan base. The likes of Adingra and Minteh don't cut it, they're not Mitoma's level. Mitoma is someone who can win a game out of nowhere. 90 million probably buys you two players who are unlikely to be Mitoma level. It's easy to waste 90 million these days.

I never quite understand the line “no matter what was offered” because it is nonsense. If they offered 10 billion then obviously we would.

Well done the club, but I think people are making a big assumption if they think that Mitoma himself had no interest in a move. I'd like to think that's the case, but is there any evidence?

I could see him going to a Champions League club in the summer. I would just say 'fair enough'. It would be wrong to stand in his way.

Presumably if Mitoma simply stated he would refuse to play for the buying club there would be little that Brighton could do?
Obviously there is no actual evidence (eg a BBC 'verified' video of him.saying it) whether this did, or did not, happen. But it is hinted at in some of the reports (which people generally seem to think are based on information directly from the club). And I'd imagine it is more than possible that he did.

Edit: OK, I admit that I just really REALLY want this to be what happened and therefore I am choosing to believe it IS what happened until.proven otherwise.

On my wages, absolutely. But Mitoma is going to retire a multi millionaire even if he sees out his career with us. I can only imagine what his marketing / advertising / sponsorship /endorsement earnings are! His post playing income is not going to be too shabby either.

I totally understand his motivation to move to play CL if that is not going to be achievable with us, but maybe he is just one of those very rare breed of footballer who is not entirely motivated by the money.
